The VW Golf VIII is the eighth generation of the VW Golf . It was presented to the public on October 24, 2019 in the Autostadt in Wolfsburg and has been at German VW dealerships since December 2019. The station wagon ("Variant") should follow at the end of 2020.

The official type designation is CD.

Body and equipment

The Golf VIII is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) of the second generation, called MQB evo . The Golf VII is based on the first generation MQB. The dimensions are similar to those of the previous model: The wheelbase remained almost the same; Width, height and thus also the frontal area have been reduced a little. The three-door, Golf Sportsvan and Golf Cabrio body variants are no longer built.

The external appearance was developed by Felipe Montoya and Marco Pavone.

As new external equipment features, all lamps (with the exception of the indicator on the basic model) are now made using LED technology, with the Matrix LED headlights already known from the Touareg and Passat being available for an extra charge. In addition, individual LED fields (instead of the entire headlamp) should be able to be exchanged for the new headlights. The bonnet is no longer held open by two gas pressure springs , but simply with a rod, as was customary on the Škoda Octavia I to III .

There are two digital displays in the interior: one for displaying the displays (the size of this display is always 26 cm or 10.25 "), the second central display replaces various operating elements. With the higher-quality Discover Pro , a noticeable recess ( touch slider ) The volume and the (standard) automatic air conditioning can be controlled. With the Radio Composition, the air conditioning can only be operated via the touchscreen. The lights and the front and rear window heating are controlled via a digital keypad. The steering column stalk and the switches for the window lifters were from the predecessor Vehicles with dual clutch transmission have a smaller gear knob because they have an electronic shift-by-wire system. Previously the system was mechanical. The Golf VIII can be equipped with a projecting head-up display . The coat hooks are no longer required B-pillar: The A-pillar trim is no longer covered with fabric, but rather ern has the same surface as the panels on the B and C pillars. There is no longer any cladding on the mirror triangle inside; The decorative strips on the rear door panels have also been omitted (the Golf V, VI and VII had decorative strips on the rear door panels). The tank capacity has been reduced to 45 liters.

There is also now a three-zone Climatronic and heated rear seats.

The logic switch on the sunroof has been replaced by a slider, with which you can open, close or tilt the roof with a swipe and push. The decorative panel of the panorama roof was also changed and now only sits in front of the glass cover; the decorative side panels installed in the Golf VII are no longer required.

The interior lighting is controlled by "touch": when you briefly tap the light, it either goes on or off, by pressing and holding it down you can dim each light.

The frameless interior mirror that was installed in the Golf VII is no longer used in the Golf VIII.

The previous equipment packages Trendline , Comfortline and Highline will not be continued. In addition to the basic version, there are the Life , Style and R-Line lines . The latter replaces the R-Line packages of the predecessor, which are subject to a surcharge. With the Golf VIII it is not possible to order only part of the R-Line package, which was possible earlier.

Assistance systems

Various assistance systems for lane keeping, environment monitoring with pedestrian and cyclist recognition are part of the standard equipment. The Golf VIII is the first Volkswagen vehicle to have a Car-2-X function with a range of around 800 meters as standard . With this function, the Golf VIII can communicate in a swarm with other vehicles or traffic infrastructure if these are appropriately equipped.

The Golf VIII also includes camera-based assistance systems such as the lane departure warning system and traffic sign recognition, which can recognize and display numerous types of signs. The control lamp of the Blind Spot Assist is now (as in the VW Passat B8 ) on the mirror cap, not on the mirror glass.

Some available assistance functions are activated when the customer makes a purchase. You can buy additional, previously not ordered electronic equipment features (upgrades), for example the navigation function, adaptive cruise control, voice control and the WLAN hotspot. The typical functions of the Amazon voice assistant, such as access to music or the weather report, can be used with the keyword “Alexa” .

The Golf VIII can use the built-in eSIM to recognize authorized drivers without a key on their smartphone. Along with the authorization, further data on language, seat settings, radio stations, etc. are transmitted so that the driver can use the Golf VIII with the settings familiar from other vehicles.

Engines

For the market launch, VW offered four supercharged gasoline engines with direct injection ( TSI ) and two diesel engines .

The TSI engines have one liter displacement, three cylinders and an output of 66 or 81 kW (90 or 110 PS) or 1.5 liter displacement, four cylinders and 96 or 110 kW (130 or 150 PS). The three-cylinder, which are derived from the 1.5-liter engine, should not exceed 95 g / km in CO 2 emissions. The 1.5-liter TSI engines work in the Miller cycle , i.e. with a reduced final compression pressure caused by early closing intake valves in combination with a turbocharger with adjustable turbine guide vanes . The 96 kW version has cylinder deactivation. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (TGI) powered by natural gas is expected to produce 96 kW (130 PS). A 2.0-liter TSI engine with an output of at least 221 kW (300 hp) is used in the Golf GTI, Golf GTI TCR and Golf R.

The further developed diesel engines are supposed to consume up to 17% less fuel in the WLTP and have been equipped with an SCR system with "twin dosing". The system works with two nitrogen oxide reduction catalytic converters arranged one behind the other, one close to the engine and one under the vehicle floor. Due to the greater distance from the engine, the exhaust gas temperature in the second SCR catalytic converter is up to 100 ° C lower. As a result, high conversion rates of more than 90% in the temperature window of 220 ° C to 350 ° C can be achieved through AdBlue injection even at exhaust gas temperatures of 500 ° C. The nitrogen oxide emissions should be 80% lower than with the previous engine generation.

Three “eTSI” and two plug-in hybrids will be available as hybrid drives. The eTSI are mild hybrids and produce 81, 96 and 110 kW (110, 130 and 150 PS). A 48-V electrical system with lithium-ion batteries and a 48-V belt starter generator, which replaces the starter , are used. The two plug-in hybrids will have a system output of 150 and 180 kW (204 and 245 PS) and with the 13 kWh Li-Ion battery they will be able to drive around 60 km purely electrically. The latter performance variant will be offered as the Golf GTE.

Economic information

The development costs amounted to 1.8 billion euros. The production time of a vehicle has been reduced by one hour compared to its predecessor.

A software error was discovered in mid-May 2020. As a result, 30,000 vehicles had to be recalled by VW and the faulty emergency assistant updated.
