To the south of the Olang Basin, the area rises to form a mountain range separated from Plan de Corones by the Furkel Pass ( 1789 m ). This carries, among other things, the Piz da Peres ( 2507 m ) and the Dreifingerspitze ( 2479 m ) and is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park .

history
Between 985 and 993, Olang was first mentioned as "Ôlaga" in the tradition book of the Brixen monastery . According to linguist Egon Kühebacher , the name is of Celtic origin and means "possession of an aulos". Between 1142 and 1155 the name form "Olagen" was attested in the tradition book of the Augustinian monastery Neustift near Brixen . Between 1052 and 1062 the district of Mitterolang was named in the tradition book of Weihenstephan Monastery as "Mittirnǒlag" . In 1460 the “Spitzige Stöckl” was erected in the hallways of Olang as a memorial to commemorate the 1448 plague .
In 1809 there was a popular uprising against the French and Bavaria, the rifle lieutenant Peter Sigmayr was executed on January 14, 1810 as a rebel. The Pustertal Railway was built in 1871 as part of the network of the Austrian Southern Railway Company , which had positive effects on the beginning tourism. Around 1900, Olang experienced an economic boom, the first tourist successes were due to the Bergfall and Schartl spas and some innkeepers. A major fire in 1904 destroyed almost the entire village of Mitterolang. In 1910 the Peter Sigmayr monument, a sandstone sculpture by Hans Piffrader , was inaugurated.
The first lift system of the "Olanger Seilbahnen AG" was built in 1966 on Kronplatz . In 1971 the Luge World Championships took place on the artificial track in Olang, in the same year the congress house was built. The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park was established in 1980. In 2000, a toboggan world championship took place on the Olang natural track.
education
There are two kindergartens in Mitterolang and Niederolang. The range of primary schools includes facilities in Niederolang, Oberolang and Geiselsberg. The community middle school is located in Mitterolang . The three primary schools and the middle school, together with the four primary schools in the neighboring community of Rasen-Antholz, form the German-speaking school district of Olang. There is also a German-language music school in Mitterolang.
The public library Olang is located in Mitterolang , which has a large inventory of books, magazines and new media as well as public internet workstations.
Attractions
The Marienkirche Oberolang dates back to the 15th century, its current appearance can be traced back to renovations (most recently around 1900). The Egidius Church in Mitterolang was built in 1138. It contains a number of important works of art from the late Gothic period : the high altar picture with the Adoration of the Magi and the Christophorus fresco on the outer wall are by the Bruneck painter Friedrich Pacher ; the frescoes on the left nave wall ( Last Supper , John on Patmos , Saints Peter and Paul ) were painted in 1481 by Friedrich Pacher's pupil Simon von Taisten . Other churches in Olang are the neo-Gothic church of St. Wolfgang in Geiselsberg and the parish church in Niederolang . In 1907 the construction of the current parish church began; this baroque reconstruction is an extension of the old Romanesque and Gothic parish church.
The Peter Sigmayr monument and the Peter Sigmayr memorial chapel in Mitterolang commemorate the freedom fighter from Olang. The village also has a sulfur spring and the Schornsteig nature trail. The Peststöckl is reminiscent of the plague of 1543.
Sports
Thanks to the Panorama toboggan run, Olang is internationally known as a tobogganing stronghold. The Olang sports club was founded in 1952. A big event for SC Olang were the world championships of artificial track tobogganing , which were held in Olang in 1971. The European championships were also held three times in the 1970s and 1980s . They made a name for themselves in the tobogganing scene. After further natural track tobogganing world cups and the 2000 World Championship, the European natural track tobogganing championship was held from February 15 to 17, 2008.
In March 2005 the first Bock World Championships took place on Kronplatz, in 2013 this spectacle was held for the second time in Olang. The Rennböckl (also Rennbock or Bock) is a vehicle that was invented in Olang and consists of a seat plate with two side-mounted handles that is mounted on a kind of runner or on a cut ski. It is controlled simply by shifting your weight or with your legs.
In February 2014 the action-packed Red Bull Skicross took place for the third time on the Olang side of the Kronplatz.
The Olang sports facilities include a public outdoor swimming pool, four tennis courts, two soccer fields (grass and artificial turf) and a driving range for golfers. Olang also has a beach volleyball field, two riding stables, a fitness trail, the Nordic Walking Park "Kronplatz-Dolomiti" and a 3D archery parkour.
