Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (born December 18, 1971 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish tennis player . The clay court specialist was the first Spanish number 1 in the tennis world rankings (in singles and doubles ), won four Grand Slam titles in singles and six in doubles.
life and career
Inspired by her two older brothers Emilio and Javier Sánchez Vicario , who were both set to become top players on the ATP Tour , Sánchez started playing tennis at the age of four. In 1985 the fourteen-year-old became a professional player.
Arantxa Sánchez first surprised the tennis world in 1989 when she defeated nineteen-year-old Steffi Graf , who had previously won five Grand Slam tournaments in a row, in the final of the French Open . Sánchez was the youngest winner in Paris at the time. The duel with the German should determine her further career. Both faced each other seven times in finals at Grand Slam tournaments, with Graf five and Sánchez two wins.
Perseverance and fighting spirit soon became the unmistakable trademarks of the baseline player who never lost a ball. Sánchez Vicario was a typical counter-player who did not have an outstanding playful weapon herself, but on the other hand brought back almost every ball. Her game also included high moon balls, with which she could break the rhythm of her opponents and get back into the game.
Sánchez had her most successful year as a single player in 1994, when she won both the French Open and the US Open and remained victorious in a total of eight tournaments. She made her fourth single Grand Slam success in 1998 when she won the French Open again by defeating Monica Seles . Sánchez Vicario reached the finals at least twice in all four Grand Slam tournaments in singles. In addition to her four individual victories, she reached eight other finals. In 1995 Arantxa Sánchez was simultaneously number one in the world rankings in singles and doubles for twelve weeks . She was the first player to do so after Martina Navrátilová .
Sánchez Vicario won a total of six Grand Slam titles in doubles and four more in mixed doubles . In 1991, Sánchez was a member of the victorious Spanish Fed Cup team that defeated the USA in the final - a success that the Spanish could repeat in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1998. Sánchez is also the record holder for the most singles and doubles wins in the Fed Cup competition.
Sánchez was also a member of the victorious Spanish Hopman Cup team in 1990 and 2002. She represented her home country five times at the Olympic Games , winning two silver and two bronze medals . In her career, Sánchez won a total of 29 singles and 69 doubles, and earned almost $ 17 million in prize money.
In August 2000 she married the sports journalist Joan Vehils. Their split followed just ten months later. In November 2002, Sánchez announced her retirement from professional tennis; she made another brief comeback in 2004 when she played a few doubles tournaments. In 2005, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was voted 27th among the best female players of all time by the American specialist publication Tennis Magazine . In 2007 she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame . In 2012 she was team leader of the Spanish Fed Cup team .
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario now lives in Sitges on the Costa del Garraf .
