Rémilly (German Remelach ) is a French commune with 2016 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
geography
The municipality of Rémilly is located on the French Nied , 23 kilometers southeast of Metz .
history
The place was first mentioned in 840 as Romeliacum , the German form of the name is documented in 1331 as Rymloch and 1445 as Remelach . Rémilly was in 1871 on the French side of the historic Franco-German language border , but belonged as a result of the Franco-German War 1871-1918 the German Reich . From 1915 to 1918 the place was renamed as Remelach .
During the Second World War , Rémilly was occupied by the Germans from June 16, 1940 to November 11, 1944, who expelled some of the residents and set up a German civil administration .
