The Opel Insignia A is a car model from the manufacturer Opel . It is classified as middle class and has been sold since autumn 2008. It replaced the Vectra , which was manufactured until summer 2008 . With the model change, production of the Vectra-based Signum was also discontinued in summer 2008.

The Buick Regal , released in autumn 2009, is identical to the Insignia. The Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-5 II are based on the same GM Epsilon 2 platform, while the slightly larger second-generation Buick LaCrosse , the South Korean Alpheon , the Chevrolet Impala and the Cadillac XTS are based on a variant of the platform with a longer wheelbase .

The model could be ordered until January 18, 2017; the last vehicle rolled off the assembly line in April. Opel produced a total of 944,670 first-generation Insignias. The successor model Insignia B was introduced on June 26, 2017.

Model history

General

The Insignia was first presented in July 2008 at the British International Motor Show. At the start of sales in November 2008, it came onto the market as a four-door notchback and as a five-door hatchback.

The station wagon version followed in March 2009 and since then has no longer been called the Caravan, as is the case with earlier Opel models, but has been called Sports Tourer. It was presented in October 2008 at the Paris Motor Show.

According to Marketing Director Alain Visser, the design of the new model is based heavily on that of the GTC study.

The Insignia is slightly larger than the last Vectra, the price has been increased slightly.

When it was launched on the market in November 2008, the list prices ranged from 22,700 euros (1.6) to 41,575 euros (2.8 V6 Turbo Automatic 4 × 4 Cosmo) for the model variants with the respective basic equipment, with full equipment the list price of the 'Sports Tourer' was 55,075 euros.

Visually, the sedans are almost identical. The difference lies in the stop of the tailgate : on the five-door hatchback this is attached to the roof, on the four-door notchback below the rear window. In addition, the hatchback has a rear window wiper, but this is not standard.

Facelift

In June 2013 the Insignia underwent a facelift. The front headlights were modified and fitted with LED strips. In addition, the bumpers and the surrounds of the fog lights have been changed. At the rear, similar to the Cabriolet Cascada, a wide chrome clip was integrated that extends into the rear lights. The rear lights received an LED brake light as standard.

From a technical point of view, there were also changes: some new engines were used, including two new direct-injection gasoline engines with turbochargers, the 1.6-liter displacement of 125 kW (170 hp) and the 2.0 SIDI 184 kW (250 hp) ) Afford. The output of the two smallest diesel engines has been increased by 10 HP (110 to 120 and 130 to 140 HP) and consumption has been reduced. The largest diesel engine was a new 2.0 CDTI with 143 kW (195 PS). Prices started at € 24,325 (as of June 10, 2013). In addition to the chassis, the interior has also been thoroughly redesigned. The operating system, which was often criticized in the trade press, was completely replaced, it was given a larger and higher-resolution display and the number of switches was significantly reduced. There was also a new operating unit for climate control, a new steering wheel and the optional semi-digital speedometer unit, which can be used to show various information on the central display as required. This equipment feature did not exist in the middle class to date.

The modernized Insignia went on sale at the end of September 2013 after its presentation at the IAA. The first vehicle intended for sale rolled off the assembly line at the main Rüsselsheim plant on August 22, 2013.

Country Tourer

Towards the end of 2013, a higher variant appeared to complete the range of the station wagon, which was sold under the name Insignia Country Tourer .

The vehicle offers increased ground clearance, all-round off-road cladding, underride protection at the front and rear, and widened fenders. The engine compartment was secured against damage from below with an underride guard made of aluminum plate.

The Insignia Country Tourer has two petrol (1.6 l with 125 kW / 170 PS and 2.0 with 184 kW / 250 PS) and two diesel engines (2.0 CDTI with 120 kW / 163 PS [since January 2015: 125 kW / 170 PS] and 143 kW / 195 PS). All-wheel drive was an additional equipment option for the diesel.

Equipment features

As the first vehicle in the Opel product range, the Insignia received an improved headlight system (called AFL +), which also replaces the previous AFL (bi-xenon with dynamic cornering light, static cornering light via its own halogen reflector lamp with 90 ° beam angle and motorway light) installed in the Vectra Special settings are used for specific driving styles (e.g. bad weather light with different luminance control to avoid self-dazzling, residential street light for low speed, automatic fade-in with high-beam assistant, etc.). The headlight units also received daytime running lights using LED technology.

Another innovation in this segment was the optionally available front camera. The so-called "Opel Eye" contains a lane departure warning system and traffic sign recognition that recognizes certain traffic signs (speed restrictions, prohibition signs) and shows them on the display. The system was developed by Opel together with Hella . The lane departure warning system warns you if you unintentionally leave your lane.

The adaptive all-wheel drive with Haldex clutch is automatically activated when the vehicle is started to improve power transmission and, when traction is no longer needed on the rear axle, it transfers 90% of the torque to the front axle to reduce consumption. The chassis, known by Opel as Flex Ride Premium , can be set in the normal , tour and sport modes . The instrument lighting is white and changes to red when sport mode is activated.

For the first time in an Opel there were side airbags for the rear seats, and seat ventilation is available for the front seats.

Engines

When the Opel Insignia went on sale, there were seven engines to choose from: four petrol and three diesel engines. All engines met the Euro 5 standard as standard .

The Insignia is powered by the front wheels. The exceptions are the 2.8-liter turbo petrol engines with 191 kW (260 PS) and 239 kW (325 PS) and the 2.0-l turbo with 184 kW (250 PS) that has been sold since 2011, as they are standard have all-wheel drive. Both drive concepts were available for the two most powerful diesels. The six-speed automatic transmission was offered for all engines except for the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 liter gasoline engines and the weakest diesel engine.

In spring 2009, two further engine variants were presented with a 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine with 132 kW (180 PS) and a 2.0 CDTI twin turbo diesel with 140 kW (190 PS). A 2.9 V6 CDTI diesel with 550 Nm torque and an output of 191 kW (260 hp) was also planned. On the occasion of the press presentation of the 2.0-liter biturbo diesel in March 2009, however, the Opel executives announced that the start of the V6 diesel would be postponed indefinitely. The 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel was also not available as planned in summer 2009, but only since December 2011. The 2-liter engine was developed in cooperation with Fiat.

An ecoFLEX variant of the 2.0-liter diesel expanded the Insignia's engine range in 2009. Thanks to modified aerodynamics and engine management, the model equipped with the 2.0-liter CDTI with 160 hp achieves CO 2 emissions of less than 140 g / km, which corresponds to around 5.0 l diesel per 100 km.

The OPC variant with a 2.8-liter V6 turbo engine offers an output of 239 kW (325 hp) and a maximum torque of 435 Nm and has been available since summer 2009. Since April 2011, Opel has offered the so-called Unlimited version, which does not limit the maximum speed and, as a notchback model with manual transmission, reaches speeds of up to 270 km / h.

In spring 2012, a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel was added to the range for the Insignia, which has an output of 143 kW (195 hp) with a maximum torque of 400 Nm. This engine is a further development of the 118 kW model. Consumption is given as 4.9 l diesel per 100 km. This engine was offered in all model variants and was also available in combination with all-wheel drive and automatic.

The new "whisper diesel" with 2.0 l displacement, 125 kW (170 hp) and a torque of 400 Nm, which was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014, has been replacing the 120 kW (163 hp) diesel since spring 2015. This Opel linked already to the new 1.6-liter diesel engines from the Astra J on. These should have a drastically reduced noise and vibration level, more power and less consumption. This engine also meets the Euro 6 standard .

Market position / sales

The predecessor Opel Vectra C sold comparatively poorly and was very well behind VW Passat, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, BMW 3-series and Škoda Octavia with a market share of 3.6% in sixth place in its class on the German market relapsed. After there had even been speculation that the Vectra would be discontinued without replacement, the Insignia was seen as Opel's great hope of increasing sales again when it was launched.

In the first full sales year of 2009, around 36,300, 28,200 in 2010, 26,700 Opel Insignia in 2011 were newly registered in Germany. These figures are around 8,000 vehicles below those of the first two years of the Vectra C. The market share in 2010 was around 7% in its class and thus still below the brand's overall market share of just under 8%. The gap to the five above-mentioned competitors has grown so much that in 2010, with the exception of the Škoda, they were sold around twice as often. In view of the sales figures in the years 2009 to 2015, the Insignia was able to leave its direct competitors such as Ford Mondeo and Škoda Superb behind. In 2016, for the first time, more Škoda Superbs (24,145) were registered in Germany than Insignia (19,658) and Mondeo (17,861).

On April 26, 2012, the 500,000. Copy made. 40% of all Insignia manufactured up to then are sports tourers, another 40% hatchback models. The share of the notchback sedan is around 20%.

In Germany, the Insignia’s first full sales year, 2009, was the model’s most successful year with 36,347 newly registered vehicles. This corresponded to a market share of 7.6% in the middle class. Opel recorded the lowest number with the Insignia 2013. In that year, the number of new registrations of the Insignia fell to 16,979 vehicles, corresponding to a market share of 4.6%. The Insignia was largely registered in Germany as diesel and for commercial owners. The Germany-wide approvals are to be broken down as follows:
