The first edition of the IIHF Super Cup took place on September 6, 1997 in front of 2,532 spectators in the Elysée Arena in Turku . The winner of the first ever European Hockey League , TPS Turku from Finland , beat the winner of the last European Cup , HK Lada Tolyatti from Russia , 3-2.

The home side took the lead in the second period through Kimmo Rintanen , but then had to swallow two goals through Denis Metljuk and Denis Tjurin . In the final section, however, they turned the game in their favor. Tomi Kallio equalized and Tony Virta scored the winning goal two minutes before the end of the game.

The 2nd edition of the IIHF Super Cup took place on November 15, 1998 in front of 3,140 spectators in the Vorarlberghalle in Feldkirch . The EHL winner VEU Feldkirch prevailed clearly against HC Košice , the winner of the IIHF Continental Cup , which was held for the first time , with 4: 0.

After a goalless first third, Austria set the course for victory halfway through the season. First, Robert Nordmark and Rick Nasheim met . Gerhard Puschnik with a penalty and Nik Zupančič increased the result in the final section. For Vorarlberg it was the fourth title win this year after the triple consisting of the national championship , the European Hockey League and the Alpine League .

The 3rd edition of the IIHF Super Cup took place on August 31, 1999 in front of 4,580 spectators in the Pista la Valascia in Ambrì . With the HC Ambrì-Piotta , the winner of the IIHF Continental Cup prevailed for the first time . At home, the Swiss defeated the Russian club HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk 2-0.

The Swiss made the decision in the early stages of the game. First, Patrick Lebeau met in the eighth minute and only a minute later Ryan Gardner got the final score. No more goals were scored in the following 50 minutes.

The 4th edition of the IIHF Super Cup, which was also the last, took place on August 29, 2000 in front of 3,500 spectators in the Romasan Ice Palace in Magnitogorsk . With HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk and HC Ambrì-Piotta , the same teams met as in the previous year. With a 3-2 win after extra time , the Russians were able to take back the previous year's defeat.

After the first section was goalless, Matwei Belousov opened the game with the lead for Magnitogorsk. In the final section, Ambrìs Omar Tognini equalized the encounter for the first time. Yevgeny Koreschkow scored the second lead for the Russians seven minutes before the end of the game, which Daniel Marois equalized shortly before the end of the game. After 30 seconds in extra time, Alexei Troschtschinsky shot Magnitogorsk to victory.
