List of year number one hits in Italy
This list contains all the singles and albums that have topped the annual ranking of the Italian charts since 1960 . The data is initially based on the charts from Musica e dischi (M&D) magazine , then the official Italian charts from FIMI .
Explanation of the data
The official Italian music charts of FIMI did not start until 1995 (albums) and 1997 (singles). Annual ratings are only available from 2000 (albums) or 2001 (singles). Therefore, the period before that is covered by M & D's annual charts in analogy to the list of number one hits in Italy . In order not to leave any gaps, M&D data were also used for the first few years of the FIMI charts without their own annual evaluation (1995–1999 and 1997–2000); these years are highlighted in dark gray in the table. The album charts of M&D and those of FIMI from 2020 also include compilations (including soundtrack albums), but these are missing in the period 2000–2019.
The two underlying annual charts differ not only in the different methods of chart survey, but also in a different system of evaluation: While the M&D annual charts are added up from the weekly charts of a year, the FIMI annual charts are a new analysis of the data of the whole year. As a result, the M&D annual ranking favors singles and albums that have been consistently successful in the weekly charts over a longer period of time, to the disadvantage of those that have sold more within a shorter time frame.
