The 2005/06 season was - if the failed preseason is included - the 89th season of the National Hockey League . The regular season lasted from October 5, 2005 to April 18, 2006. Due to the lockout in the 2004/05 season , a start was uncertain for a long time. In mid-July 2005 an agreement was reached after more than 300 days of lockout, so that the 2005/06 season could take place in full. During the Winter Olympics in Turin, the NHL paused to allow players to participate. Instead, the NHL All-Star Game was canceled. In the playoffs from April 21 to June 19, 2006 , the Carolina Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup .
Collective Bargaining Agreement
The new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) had a salary cap of $ 39 million per NHL club. A single player was allowed to earn a maximum of 20 percent of the budget ($ 7.8 million). At the same time, the minimum wage was raised from 185,000 to 450,000 US dollars.
The most prominent "victims" of the new salary cap were Dave Andreychuk , until then captain of the reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and Alexander Mogilny of the New Jersey Devils , both of whom were removed from the respective squad during the season and the aisle in the American Hockey League had to compete.
Rule changes
For the season, some rule changes were made to make the game faster and, above all, more goalscoring:
- The 2-line pass has been abolished.
- In the event of a tie after extra time, there will be a shootout in the regular season. In playoff games, play continues until a goal is scored.
- The area of goalkeeping equipment has been reduced.
- The neutral zone has been made smaller by about 120 centimeters (4 feet), with the goal line being moved 60 centimeters (2 feet) closer to the boards.
- Players who start a brawl in the last 5 minutes of the game will receive a game misconduct penalty, will be banned from the next game and the team will be fined.
- The referees are equipped with a headset to announce penalties etc. over the loudspeaker system in the stadium.
- Offenses such as hooks, cross checks and disabilities are punished more strictly.
- A team that causes an unauthorized break in the break ( icing ) is not allowed to change players during the game interruption. This is to prevent a team from provoking an icing in order to get an opportunity to change players.
- Any player who shoots the puck out of his own defensive zone without deflecting it over the plexiglass border will be punished with a game delay penalty.
Entry Draft
- Main article: NHL Entry Draft 2005
The 43rd NHL Entry Draft was postponed from June 25th and 26th to July 30th, 2005 and took place in the Canadian capital Ottawa . The order was drawn because no ranking was possible due to the canceled preseason. The Pittsburgh Penguins were allowed to vote as the first team, who chose the Canadian center Sidney Crosby , who was favored by the observers .
The first player not from North America was the Slovenian Anže Kopitar in eleventh place, the only German player was the winger Philip Gogulla of the Cologne Sharks , who was pulled in 48th position by the Buffalo Sabers .
