René Rast (born October 26, 1986 in Minden ) is a German racing driver . He grew up in Steyerberg in the Nienburg / Weser district ( Lower Saxony ). Rast competed in the Porsche Supercup between 2008 and 2012 and won the championship title in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Together with Kelvin van der Linde , he won the ADAC GT Masters in 2014 . In 2017 Rast switched to Audi in the DTM , in which he became champion straight away. In 2019 he became champion for the second time.

Career

Beginnings in karting and formula racing (1996-2004)

Rast began his motorsport career in karting in 1996 , where he was active until 2002. Among other things, he won the North German ICA Junior Kart Cup in 2001 and the German ICA Junior Kart Cup in 2002.

2003 changed Rest in Formula racing and went for two years in the German Formula BMW in. After finishing his first season in 18th place overall, he was 23rd overall in 2004 .

Various racing series (2005-2015)

Rest in the 2011 Porsche Supercup

In 2005 Rast switched to touring car racing . He competed in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup , scored six race wins and won the championship. In 2006 he drove in the German SEAT León Supercopa and was runner-up behind Florian Gruber with three wins .

In 2007 Rast started for the MRS Team in the German Porsche Carrera Cup and ended the first season with a podium finish in tenth place overall. He also made a guest appearance in the Porsche Supercup . In 2008 Rast won the German Porsche Carrera Cup with a victory. In addition, he took part in ten of the eleven races of the Porsche Supercup. He achieved a podium finish and finished the season in fifth place in the drivers' championship.

In 2009 Rast achieved six victories in the Porsche Supercup and finished the season as runner-up with 207 to 254 points behind Jeroen Bleekemolen . In 2010, Rast switched to Lechner Racing and won four races in the Porsche Supercup. He decided the championship with 152 to 146 points ahead of Nick Tandy for himself. In 2010 he took part in six ADAC GT Masters races. He managed a victory and he finished the season in 17th place. In 2011, Rast stayed with Lechner Racing in the Porsche Supercup. With four victories, he leads the championship one race weekend before the end of the season. He started again in ADAC GT Masters races as well as in the German Porsche Carrera Cup and the American Le Mans Series . Rast also completed DTM test drives for BMW .

In 2016 , Rast competed in the Berlin ePrix in the FIA Formula E championship as a substitute for António Félix da Costa on the Aguri team .

DTM (since 2016)

On July 17, 2016, he made his DTM debut in the second race at the weekend in Zandvoort , when he was allowed to replace the injured Adrien Tambay in Team Rosberg . At this one-time start, he finished 19th. At the finale of the 2016 season in Hockenheim , Rast - now part of the Phoenix team - stood in for Mike Rockenfeller , who at Abt Sportsline represented Mattias Ekström , who was starting at the same time as the final of the World Rallycross Championship . In Saturday's race he achieved his first place in the points in sixth place, on Sunday he went without a point. In the overall classification, he finished 23rd.

For the 2017 season, Rast finally switched to the DTM and competed again for Team Rosberg, where he became a team-mate of Jamie Green . At the second race weekend he achieved his first podium finish in third place at the Lausitzring . In Mogyoród he took his first pole position on Saturday and finished sixth in the race. A day later he achieved his second pole position and his first DTM race win. He repeated this a little more than a month later in Volokolamsk . At the end of September, he achieved his third win of the season in Spielberg . Before the last race of the season at Hockenheim, four drivers - Ekström, Green, Rockenfeller and Rast - had a chance for the title. With a second place both in qualification and in the race, Rast overtook Ekström and Green in the last race and won the championship title with 179 points in his first full DTM season.

In 2018 Green and Rast stayed with Rosberg. At the season opener in Hockenheim, Rast finished ninth and seventh. He had a serious accident at the Saturday race at the Lausitzring. After touching his brand colleague Loïc Duval , he went off the track and rolled over. Due to the accident, Rast was admitted to the Senftenberg hospital, from which he was released on Sunday morning. He remained without major wounds. The race was interrupted for about 15 minutes and then restarted. Rast missed the second race on Sunday due to the serious damage to his vehicle. He took his first win of the season at Zandvoort on Sunday and finished third at Brands Hatch, another podium place. In Misano on Sunday, he finished third to secure his third podium of the season. At the Nürburgring , he was the first DTM driver to achieve the maximum number of points of 56 on a weekend, after first taking pole position on Saturday and Sunday and then winning the respective race. He was also able to win both races in Spielberg and at the season finale in Hockenheim. With that he set a record for most victories in a row in the DTM. Despite this winning streak, at the end of the season he was defeated by Gary Paffett with 251 points , who was the new champion with 255 points, and took second place in the drivers' championship.

In mid-December 2018, Green and Rast were confirmed as drivers for Team Rosberg for the 2019 season . After he was eliminated in the first race shortly before the end of the season opener in Hockenheim, he achieved his first win of the season on Sunday. At the Sunday race in Zolder he scored his second victory of the year. At Misano, he went from pole position to positions two and three. In Nuremberg he achieved his third win of the season on Saturday, and on Sunday, starting from pole position, he finished seventh after a collision with his brand colleague Nico Müller on the first lap. In the further course of the season he achieved three more wins of the season: At Brands Hatch and at the Lausitzring on Sunday, and at the Nürburgring on Saturday. With a third place in the Sunday race at the Nürburgring, Rast won his second championship title early after 16 of 18 races. At the season finale in Hockenheim, he achieved his seventh win in 2019 on Saturday and third on Sunday.
