T5 and T6 are names of the VW bus from the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand . Originally launched in 2003 as the T5 , the vehicle has been marketed as the T6 since the second facelift in July 2015 . It is a pickup truck and minibus available.
Model history
General
Like its predecessor, it has a transverse front engine and front-wheel drive . The more powerful engines are also available with automatic transmission and / or all-wheel drive . The side walls are now pressed from a single sheet metal part, so there is no vertical seam between the sheet metal parts. The now joystick-like gearshift lever is relocated to the control panel at the driver's seat and operates the gearbox via cables.
The vehicle has independent suspension on the front and rear axles. The front axle is connected to the vehicle via a subframe and consists of MacPherson suspension struts and lower triangular wishbones . It has a stabilizer to reduce roll. The rear axle is designed as a semi-trailing arm axle with mini-block springs and separate shock absorbers .
The brake system has internally ventilated brake discs with single-piston floating calipers at the front and rear . A rack and pinion steering with hydraulic servo assistance is used (electric from 2019).
The vehicle is built in the Volkswagen plant in Hanover and in Poznań , Poland . In the California camping version , the base vehicle (from Hanover-Stöcken) is converted into a motorhome in Hanover-Limmer .
The structure of the model range consists of the commercial vehicle transporter and the car versions. The transporter is available as a station wagon , panel van , flatbed , double cab or only with a chassis (for external bodies). The car versions are available as Caravelle , Multivan and California . Caravelle is the entry-level car version. Multivan is the top version and has sliding seats. California is the RV version. It is the first bus generation that is no longer exported to the USA due to a lack of approval.
The diesel versions with diesel soot particle filters (DPF) have been available since the end of 2006 .

Facelift
2009: T5.2 - 1st facelift
In autumn 2009 VW revised the T5. In addition to a facelift with new, wider headlights, a newly shaped radiator grille, bumpers and rear-view mirrors, there were also innovations in the technology and in the interior.
There were new four-cylinder diesel engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters and common rail injection , which were offered in various power levels from 62 kW to 132 kW with one or two turbochargers (biturbo). The five cylinders were omitted. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) was now standard and all versions met the EU-5 emissions standard. The Otto engine with 85 kW initially remained unchanged in the range. In addition, Volkswagen offered the T5 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine (TSI) in two output levels instead of the previous 3.2-liter VR6 . For the first time, a seven-speed dual clutch transmission was offered.

2015: T6 - 2nd facelift
In a second revision, the name was changed to T6. There were visual changes to the bonnet, the front fenders, the bumpers, the headlights, the taillights and the tailgate. In the interior, the dashboard and steering wheel have been changed, as well as the assistance and infotainment systems. The chassis and noise insulation have also been improved.
The new VW EA288 diesel engine series was introduced for the drive train . In order to meet the Euro 6 emissions standard, it is equipped with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment . The tank for the necessary AUS 32 urea solution has a volume of 13 liters for a range of around 7000 km.

2019: T6.1 - 3rd facelift
Another revision took place in 2019. The model has since been referred to as the T6.1.
The design was u. a. refined with narrower headlights and a larger grille.
The T6.1 also has a new range of engines with the latest Euro 6d-temp emissions standard and the latest modular infotainment kit (MIB 3). With the electromechanical power steering , many assistance systems ( Lane Assist , Trailer Assist , Park Assist and others), which are familiar from Volkswagen's car models, are being used in vans.
A purely electric version is being developed with the company Abt .
