Westerholz ( Danish : Vesterskov ) is a municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein. Dollerupholz ( Dollerupskov ), Grünberg, Hörreberg, Kiekut, Knös, Kreiberg, Osterholz ( Østerskov ), Poseby, Seeklüft ( Søklev , also Søkløft ), Sonnholm, Sponbrück ( Spaanbro ) and Unewattholz ( Undevadskov ) are located in the municipality that is in its current form exists since 1970.
geography
Westerholz is located on a steep coast with a beach on the Flensburg Outer Fjord and is a recognized resort.
history
The place was founded at the end of the 18th century by the Lundsgaard estate , which is located in Grundhof . Dollerupholz was first mentioned in 1607.
From 1911 the local writer Georg Asmussen (1856–1933) lived in Westerholz, which was already a popular vacation spot and retirement home for retirees back then. His villa is still preserved today.
From 1913 to the 1940s, the expressionist painter and co-founder of the artist group “ Die Brücke ” Erich Heckel lived in the community during the summer months. Numerous pictures from the landscape of fishing and from the coast of the Flensburg Fjord testify to his work during this time.
Until 1961 there were brick factories in the villages of the municipality, which until the 1950s used trucks to transport their products to the fjord. Today a monument commemorates the brickworks.

The municipal council has nine seats. Since the local elections in 2018 account for it to the voter community WGW five seats, the CDU three seats and the SPD a seat.

Since 2011 the "Waltag" initiated by the Natural Science Museum Flensburg has been taking place in Westerholz on the beach. It is reminiscent of the stranding of a 20 m long fin whale on this stretch of coast on March 17, 1911. The mill golden eagle
The “Steinadler” windmill, built in 1876, is the largest Dutch gallery in Northern Germany. It is located above the beach and can also be seen from afar from the sea. It is a listed building. After extensive restoration, it is used as a restaurant and hotel.
