The three- cushion world cup 1987/4 was the 4th world cup tournament in the second year of the three- cushion world cup. It took place from 11th to 13th December 1987 in this discipline of carom billiards in Valkenburg (South Holland) .
For the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl there was the second World Cup victory in Valkenburg in 1987. The 25-year-old won against the Italian Marco Zanetti of the same age in the final with 3-1 sets. The result was not enough for the overall World Cup victory. With a hard-fought 3-2 win over Jean Bessems in the round of 16, Raymond Ceulemans secured this title for the second time. Ceulemans was already leading 2-0 sets and only won in the fifth set with 15:13 in 14 shots. He was also the first player to top the new world rankings introduced on November 30, 1987. The first eleven places in the world rankings were set for the World Cup. Another new feature this season was a qualifying tournament in Spa, Belgium. At this Grand Prix tournament, the 12th seeded player was played for the World Cup. The winner was the Belgian Laurent Boulanger . However, since the BWA statutes allow a maximum of two players from one country to be on the seeding list, the Spaniard Avelino Rico secured this place in second place. As the winner, Boulanger was allowed to participate in Valkenburg as an unseeded player.
The tournament was played with 16 participants. The whole tournament was played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each.
The first four of the world rankings (in this case Raymond Ceulemans, Jun'ichi Komori, Nobuaki Kobayashi and Rini van Bracht) were seeded for the round of 16.
If a set was completed by player one at 15 points, player two had no follow-up kick.

The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
