history

From the 15th century to the present

The place Kaliss is mentioned for the first time in 1431. He gained local fame as a post station on the Hamburg-Berlin route. The post forge building existed until the 1940s. The construction of the Elde Canal from 1568, which connected the Elde with Dömitz and thus created a navigable connection to the Elbe, was an important prerequisite for the industrial and commercial settlement in the area. In 1755 an iron foundry was built two kilometers west of the village, which processed the lawn iron ore found in this area into wrought iron. However, the quality of the iron was so poor that production was stopped again in 1770. A leather factory opened in the buildings in 1771. Around 1800 a tannery , fulling mill, oil and grain mill moved in.

The renaming of the place in Neu Kaliss took place in 1843 with the amalgamation of parts of the place Kaliss, Findewirunshier and the paper mill.

From 1952 to 2011 Neu Kaliß belonged to the Ludwigslust district (until 1990 in the GDR district of Schwerin , then in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Since the district reform in 2011 , the municipality has been in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district .

In 2007 the place was voted the most beautiful village in the former Ludwigslust district.

Papermaking

Schoeller & Bausch paper mill (before 1913)

In 1799 the first paper mill was built in the village, which also used the water power of the canal. In 1871 Felix Heinrich Schoeller and Theodor Bausch from Düren founded the Felix Schoeller & Bausch fine paper factory . This was the first time that paper was produced by machine in Mecklenburg. The excellent quality of the paper with the Mecklenburg bull's head as a watermark achieved a great reputation on the German market. The company was one of the leading paper manufacturers in Germany early on, and it was soon exporting its fine and specialty papers to distant countries. After the First World War , wood and straw pulp were used instead of rags for paper production. After the Second World War , which the factory survived unscathed, the machines were dismantled in 1946 and brought to the Soviet Union with 650 freight wagons as reparations . It was not until 1951, after Viktor Bausch and his staff rebuilt the factory despite the scarcity of materials , that paper production could be resumed. Shortly thereafter, the factory was expropriated and made public . After Rudolf Bausch, Viktor Bausch's brother and managing director of the company, was kidnapped by the NKVD in 1945 after a denunciation by the NKVD to special camp No. 9 Fünfeichen (where he died in 1946), Viktor and the remaining members of the Bausch family had to go to Neu Kaliss leave. Production was continued in the following decades until the fall of the Berlin Wall in the VEB Feinpapierfabriken Neu Kaliss. In 1990 the company was privatized and acquired by the Melitta group of companies in 1992 . This shut down the old systems and built a completely new plant in the village by 1995.

The former watermill was built in 1851 on the island formed by the Müritz-Elde-Wasserstraße and Alte Elde. The Slavic name of the place mentioned for the first time in 1496 was Vinzire . As early as 1815, ten colonists were settled here on the orders of the Grand Duke. The name was popularly reinterpreted as Find Wirunshier . According to a legend, it originated from the saying "Oh, we will find ourselves here" by two brothers who were both trained millers and who happened to meet again here after years. The mill, the nearby bascule bridge and the lock were also given the name “Find Wirunshier”. The mill survived the Second World War without further damage. The owner couple, Markurth, were expropriated, arrested and imprisoned in the Stasi prison in Bautzen in the early 1950s . The mill, which was closed in 1992, is now a hydroelectric power station and, according to its own statements, generates one gigawatt hour of electricity per year, which is sufficient to cover the electricity needs of the entire community.
