Kelly (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kelly is a first and last name , especially in English-speaking countries .

Origin and meaning

The family name Kelly is etymologically of Irish origin and the second most common name in Ireland (after Murphy ). Later it also became a first name (originally male, later female). Name variants are Kelley, Kelli, Kellye, Kellie, Kelle, Kellog, O'Kelly , McCullough and Cheallaigh (as a female surname, for example, Ní Cheallaigh ). Mostly Kelly is an Anglicization of the Gaelic clan name Ó Ceallaigh , which means something like descendant of Ceallach . Ceallach itself means warlike , which was taken up by recruiting sergeants in many English-speaking armies ( Irish Army , British Army and Australian Army ) under the meaning of brave warrior . In American folk culture, it also means warrior princess . The spelling Kelley is often associated with mainly Protestant famine immigrants, although officials on Ellis Island used different spellings. The patron saint of the Kelly clan is Saint Grellan .
