The list of cities in Spain gives an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities of the state of Spain .

Cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants by population

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions and two autonomous cities ( Ceuta and Melilla ) with different degrees of independence. Below the autonomous regions, the state association is divided into 50 provinces . Seven autonomous regions are made up of a single province: Asturias , Balearic Islands , Cantabria , La Rioja , Madrid , Murcia and Navarra . The provinces themselves are divided into municipalities (Spanish municipios ).

The following table contains the cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, the results of the population censuses (VZ) of March 1, 1991, November 1, 2001 and November 1, 2011 as well as the estimate of the National Institute of Statistics in Spain (INE) for the first January 2018. The autonomous region and the province to which the city belongs are also listed. The capitals of the autonomous regions and provinces are marked by * after the name of the region or province. The Canary Islands have two equal capitals.

Cities in regions where a language other than Spanish is spoken often have both a Spanish and an indigenous place name. In this case, both names are mentioned, with the name in the table that is mainly used in official linguistic usage at regional and local level, while the other name is below the table. The population figures refer to the respective municipality within its political limits, without politically independent suburbs.
