East facade of the Freiburg theater
  • Cologne / Freiburg im Breisgau : Two theater productions of William Shakespeare's dramas angered audiences in Cologne and Freiburg in early 1982. In his interpretation of Macbeth at the Cologne Theater, Luc Bondy dared to present three naked witches and an equally veiled royal couple, Valentin Jeker failed in his choice of Hamlet at the Freiburg Theater with a lazy and obese leading actor, Martin Sperr , whom Die Zeit also described as a "self-promoter". Nevertheless, both implementations were far from being downright scandalous: “Strangely enough, both performances are more delicate than spectacular in nature, far removed from the provocative, 'exposing' means of a rabid directing theater. Both performances also mean well with Shakespeare's characters, do not demonize them, do not maliciously expose them. No titans, no monsters, no murder machines are shown, but weak, defenseless, often pitiful people. "
Felix Mitterer
  • Hall in Tirol / Tirol : The planned premiere of Felix Mitterer's Stigma as part of the Tyrolean folk plays in Hall, alongside Karl Schönherr's Faith and Home and Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando's Emperor Josef and the railway guard's daughter , is prohibited by the local mayor after reading the play. Thereupon an attempt was first made to find another venue in Innsbruck or Vienna before the actual theater scandal began, in that the play was initially insulted in a letter to the editor as "dirty porno-blasphemous-anarchist theater". In June, the European Citizens' Initiative for the Protection of Human Dignity specifically called for the deletion of two scenes. The media response in the German-speaking area was great, but the actual premiere in the window took place without the expected scandal.
  • The first book by the Romanian-German writer Herta Müller , Niederungen , is only published censored in Romania after it had been unedited by the publisher for four years. 1984 appeared in the original version in Germany.
  • American libraries launch Banned Books Week against encroachments on freedom of expression in literature.
