Melle is a French commune with 6,213 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Niort and the Canton of Melle .
It was created as the Commune nouvelle of the same name with effect from January 1, 2019 by merging the previous municipalities of Melle , Mazières-sur-Béronne , Paizay-le-Tort , Saint-Léger-de-la-Martinière and Saint-Martin-lès-Melle who all have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Airvault.

location
The community is located around 28 kilometers southeast of Niort . It is located in the catchment area of the river Béronne and its tributaries Berlande and Légère . Neighboring municipalities are: Beaussais-Vitré and Sepvret in the north, Chey and Lezay in the northeast, Saint-Vincent-la-Châtre in the east, Fontivillié in the southeast, Pouffonds , Saint-Génard and Chef-Boutonne in the south, Lusseray and Brioux-sur-Boutonne in the southwest, Périgné and Saint-Romans-lès-Melle in the west and Celles-sur-Belle in the northwest.
