Germany took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, with 153 athletes, 58 women and 95 men, in all 15 sports.

Nominations

In a first nomination phase on December 17, 2009, 44 German athletes (21 women and 23 men) in five sports and an additional 16 supervisors (trainers, doctors, physiotherapists and supervisors) were named for the games. In a second nomination phase, a further 101 athletes were nominated on January 22, 2010, as well as several possible athletes who would have been able to move up if the qualification standard had been met later.

With the second qualification round, a total of 141 supervisors were initially nominated, all of whom had to sign the DOSB's declaration of honor and commitment . In addition, a request was made to the Birthler authority for Stasi connections for all supervisors . Seven athletes were nominated on January 27th. The head of the mission was Bernhard Schwank , head physician Bernd Wolfarth and head physiotherapist Klaus Eder . The German team aimed to defend first place in the unofficial nation ranking, but finished second behind Canada in the final score. The team was able to win one medal less than in Turin with an Olympic victory.

Flag bearer

At the opening ceremony, bobsleigh pilot André Lange led the German team into the BC Place Stadium as the flag bearer , and at the closing ceremony Magdalena Neuner , the most successful German female athlete at the Winter Games , carried the flag.

Success Bonuses

For particularly successful athletes, the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation - as with previous games - awarded prizes: 15,000 euros for winning a gold medal, 10,000 for silver and 7,500 for bronze. Non-medal ranks were also rewarded with a success payment, graduated up to 8th place (1,500 euros). Participants who achieved more than one placement in the honored ranks were generally paid 50% of the standard rate for their second and subsequent placements. A total of 555,000 euros in prizes were distributed to 75 athletes. Some athletes with high-value advertising contracts voluntarily waived the funding.
