The Bundesautobahn 226 (abbreviation: BAB 226 ) - short form: Autobahn 226 (abbreviation: A 226 ) - is a short motorway in the north of Lübeck .

It was opened to traffic on May 1, 1938 as a section of the Reichsautobahn Hamburg ↔ Lübeck. Since the extension of the A 1 in the direction of Neustadt , the route, now known as the A 226, branches off the A 1 near Bad Schwartau , continues to Lübeck-Siems (Kücknitz) and joins the B 75 Lübeck ↔ Travemünde ( Skandinavienkai ). The Herrentunnel on the B 75 between the Siems exit and Lübeck city center is subject to a toll .

At the Bad Schwartau motorway triangle there are no direct connections between the north-eastern part of the A 1 and the A 226, but there is an approx. 1 km long connection via roads within Lübeck and the community of Ratekau between the Sereetz junction on the A 1 and the junction Lübeck-Dänischburg on the A 226.

history

Similar to today's A 1 between Lübeck-Zentrum and the Schwartauer Dreieck, today's A 226 was originally a three-lane motorway without any structural directional separation. The middle lane was intended for overtaking in both directions. Given the low volume of traffic at the time, that would hardly have been a problem, today it would be unimaginable. Back then, the Schwartauer Dreieck was built as a left-hand trumpet and, coming from Siems , offered travel options in the direction of Hamburg (in the sense of today's A1 ) and in the direction of Ratekau (as a short motorway junction). From the Schwartauer Dreieck, the old motorway exactly followed the current route including the Danishburg exit that was already there at the time. Over a length of then about 900 meters, the old motorway ran up to 80 meters further south and significantly higher than today: At this point, the motorway crossed the Travemünde railway line . The old motorway bridge was preserved until around 2006. It was demolished when the railway line was electrified. Today only the existing embankment reminds of the old route. Further to the east, today's motorway meets the old route again, but after about 150 meters today's motorway deviates again and runs through a forest to its end in Lübeck-Siems. The old three-lane route, on the other hand, runs up to 170 meters further south through a residential area. The old motorway is still preserved here today: This concrete track, which is around 500 meters long, is used privately, however, and runs partly through the gardens of the residents. Part of this old route is a stone arched bridge over the street Zum Herrenmoor . The last few meters of this motorway were renatured after it was closed. Its end was a little south of today's Lübeck-Siems motorway junction and was a simple triangular junction into the B 75, a street that also looked completely different at the time. This end of the motorway was called "Travemünde" as a junction in the 1950s. Around 1975 the motorway (together with the A 1 in the Bad Schwartau area) was rebuilt to its present-day condition. Due to the increasing importance of the Skandinavienkai as the largest ferry port in the old Federal Republic to the Baltic Sea, this seemed urgently necessary. In the new numbering scheme of all German motorways planned in the early 1970s, the A 226, like the A 1, had the temporary designation A 11, but was never signposted as such, since the current numbering scheme was introduced in 1975.
