Ars-sur-Moselle (German Ars an der Mosel ) is a French commune with 4,723 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Metz , was the capital of the canton of Ars-sur-Moselle and is now part of the canton of Les Coteaux de Moselle .

geography

The municipality of Ars-sur-Moselle is located on the left bank of the Moselle , about ten kilometers southwest of Metz at an altitude between 165 and 344 m above sea level. The western half of the 11.6 km² municipal area is part of the Lorraine Regional Nature Park .

history

The place was first mentioned in 881 as Arx , which is derived from Arcus and refers to the remains of a Roman aqueduct .
