The 1997/98 season was the 35th season of the men's Bundesliga . It began on August 1st, 1997 and ended on May 9th, 1998. First and thus German champion was 1. FC Kaiserslautern . For the first and so far only time in the history of the Bundesliga, a newcomer became a champion straight away.

Season overview

Championship duel

The season was marked by the title duel between 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which had just been promoted from the 2. Bundesliga , and the defending champion FC Bayern Munich . Already on the first match day - when it was not foreseeable that this game would be the top duel of the season - there was a direct clash between the two clubs. FCK, trained by Otto Rehhagel , won 1-0 in the Munich Olympic Stadium . This victory was particularly explosive because it was Rehhagel's first game against FCB since he was released there in 1996. With a 1-0 win against Hertha BSC , FCK climbed to the top of the table on matchday two and then held the top position without interruption from the fourth to the last matchday. FCK also won the second leg against FC Bayern at Betzenberg (2-0), and despite a period of weakness towards the end of the second half of the season, Lauterer secured the championship title early: On the penultimate matchday, Kaiserslautern defeated fellow promoted VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 at home while the competitor from Munich at MSV Duisburg only achieved a 0-0. Lautern had an unassailable lead of four points before the last match day and was established as champions.

FC Bayern Munich under coach Giovanni Trapattoni allowed themselves to lose more surprising points in addition to the defeats against FCK, but ended up being runner-up and won the DFB Cup . In this competition Bayern were able to retaliate against Kaiserslautern (2-1 away win in the round of 16) and Duisburg (2-1 win in the final in Berlin). In the Champions League, however, they lost the first German duel in history against defending champions Borussia Dortmund with 0-0 and 0-1 after extra time.

1. FCK and FCB qualified for the Champions League; for the European Cup Winners' Cup , which was played for the last time in 1998/99, the defeated cup finalist from Duisburg qualified.

Decisions on the last game day

Since the championship question was decided prematurely, on the last matchday it was only about the European Cup places and the relegation places. Bayer 04 Leverkusen had already been confirmed as third and thus UEFA Cup participants; FC Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart also qualified . Looking up had Werder Bremen , which was defeated in a direct duel in Stuttgart and Hansa Rostock , which, after an outstanding season of sixth place and entry into the Intertoto Cup remained.

Arminia Bielefeld was determined prematurely as relegated. Founding member 1. FC Köln , who had to relegate for the first time , went to the 2nd Bundesliga and, after eleven years, the first division of Karlsruher SC . The KSC, leaders of the table on the first and third matchdays, slipped to third from bottom after a 2: 4 in Rostock (with 38 points, the KSC rose with the highest number of points so far (as of 2020) since the introduction of the three-point rule from the Bundesliga ), while Borussia Mönchengladbach saved themselves with a 2-0 win in Wolfsburg. Due to Cologne's relegation, from 1998 until relegation in the 2017/18 season, Hamburger SV was the last club to have always been a member of the Bundesliga since the first season in 1963/64.

Other clubs

In addition to Kaiserslautern, the other two promoted VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC also stayed in the league. All promoted players were represented in the first division without interruption until 2006.

Borussia Dortmund could not meet the high expectations with the new coach Nevio Scala , but reached the semi-finals in the Champions League, in which BVB were eliminated by Real Madrid . In the German duel against Bayern Munich, Dortmund had the upper hand in the quarter-finals (0-0 away, 1-0 after extra time at home). The VfB Stuttgart under Joachim Loew reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup the finals, but then failed in Stockholm with 0: 1 on Chelsea . Despite a fourth place in the table and the associated qualification for the UEFA Cup, Löw was dismissed at the end of the season and replaced by Winfried Schäfer .

various

A press conference by FC Bayern coach Giovanni Trapattoni became legendary and entered German usage with the following quotes: “Bottle empty”, “What allow Strunz ?” And “I have finished”.

On the 27th matchday several matches were canceled due to Castor transports . They were made up after the 32nd matchday, which was criticized by some as a distortion of competition.
