Goiânia (pronunciation: [ɡoˈjɐ̃niɐ]), officially Portuguese Município de Goiânia , is the capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás . It is located in central Brazil on a plateau about 750 meters above sea level. It has a little over 1.5 million inhabitants (2019), the municipal area covers about 729 square kilometers. The distance to the capital Brasília is around 200 kilometers, to the economic center of São Paulo it is 950 kilometers.
history
Goiânia is one of the planned cities in Brazil. Its foundation stone was laid on October 24, 1933, with the intention of making it the future capital of the state of Goiás. Until then, the baroque city of Goiás Velho was the capital of the state. The city planned by Pedro Ludovico and realized by Atílio Correia Lima is now one of the Brazilian cities with the best quality of life. Of the 1,100 hectares of built-up area, 375 hectares are green.
In 1987 there was a serious accident involving radioactive material in Goiânia , the Goiânia accident .
geography
Goiânia borders in the north on the municipalities of Goianira , Nerópolis and Goianápolis , in the south on Aparecida de Goiânia , in the east on Bela Vista de Goiás and in the west on Goianira and Trindade . Goiânia is traversed by the Rio Meia Ponte and its tributaries, including the Ribeirão João Leite.
The biome is the Brazilian cerrado .
City administration
Goiânia is divided into seven administrative regions, which in turn consist of many bairros .
Mayor Iris Rezende Machado ( MDB ) has exercised executive power as city prefect since 2017 . The legislature rests with the Chamber of Deputies Câmara Municipal.
The Municipal Administrative Center (Centro Administrativo Municipal) is located on Av. do Cerrado, nº 999, Parque Lozandes, CEP: 74884-092.

The airport of Goiânia is the Aeroporto Internacional Santa Genoveva-Goiânia , in short: Santa Genoveva, (IATA code: GYN); With a passenger volume of more than 1.5 million passengers in 2007, it is currently being expanded. A new runway and a new terminal will adapt Santa Genoveva Airport to the increasing traffic. Direct flights connect Goiânia with the main Brazilian airports in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
In addition, the city has a huge bus terminal, which is one of the most important hubs for public buses in Brazil.

Town twinning
Goiânia has had a partnership with the German city of Idar-Oberstein since 2004 . This city partnership resulted in a university collaboration between the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of the University of Trier and the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Goiás - IFG (Federal Institute for Education, Science and Technology, abbreviated Instituto Federal de Goiás or IFG) in the field of sustainable technologies which was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2009.
