Iván Luis Zamorano Zamora (born January 18, 1967 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean football player who was best known for his nose for goals and his headball strength. He was nicknamed Bam Bam and occasionally - based on his first name - Ivan the Terrible . In Italy it was known as the helicopter because when it hits headers it seemed like it could stay in the air.
From 1987 to 2001 he played in the Chilean national soccer team , for which he scored 34 goals in 69 games.
Career start
Iván Zamorano's first career station in Europe was actually FC Bologna , which acquired its transfer rights in 1988 from the Chilean club Cobresal . Even before the first competitive game, however, his coach found him not good enough for the Italian league. The FIFA -Agent Vinico Fioranelli brought him then to Switzerland for FC St. Gallen . At that time, Fioranelli even had to pay extra to get FC St. Gallen to include Iván Zamorano in the squad. He was a very thin guy and the newspapers predicted a transfer flop. These voices soon fell silent, however, as Zamorano scored a total of 23 goals in 33 games in the 1989/1990 season, making it the most successful goalscorer of the season.
The time in Spain
In October 1990, Zamorano made the jump to the Spanish Primera División and moved to Sevilla FC . Because of his good performance with the Andalusians, he was signed by Real Madrid for $ 5 million in the summer of 1992 . He won the hearts of the fans there primarily through his performance in the 5-0 home win of the Madrilenians against arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the 1994/95 season, in which he played a major role with a hat trick . In the same year he won the Spanish championship title with Real and was top scorer with 28 goals in 38 games.
The time in Italy
In 1996 he left Real Madrid and moved to Inter Milan , where he scored 41 goals in a total of 149 competitive games. In the 1996/97 season he reached the finals of the UEFA Cup with the Milanese against FC Schalke 04 , but won it only one year later in an all-Italian final against Lazio Rome (where he won 3-0 over the Romans scored the first goal). Zamorano received international attention during this time due to his somewhat idiosyncratic shirt number . Since he had to hand over the jersey with the number 9 to Ronaldo for marketing reasons after the engagement of Ronaldo in the summer of 1997, he played with the shirt number 18 from that point onwards, which he indicated by a glued-on plus sign between the 1 and the 8 (1 + 8 ) at least mathematically transformed back into a 9.
End of career
In December 2000 Iván Zamorano moved to Club América (in Mexico City ). There he played quite successfully for two years before moving back to Chile in 2003, to Colo Colo , the club he had admired as a child. There he first made a good name for himself with the fans, as he waived a large part of his salary due to the poor financial situation of Colo Colo in order to relieve the club a little.
In the final second leg of the Apertura round in 2003, which Colo Colo played against CD Cobreloa , the star striker freaked out and attacked the referee with punches and kicks due to a controversial offside decision . The result of his failure: the red card for assault and as a result a record ban of eleven games imposed by the Chilean national association. Colo Colo lost the game 0-4 and Zamorano ended his professional career.
The very popular athlete in his home country gave his farewell game in Santiago de Chile . An America selection with Ronaldo , José Luis Chilavert , Alexi Lalas and Carlos Valderrama defeated a Chilean selection 5-2 in this game. Iván Zamorano completed one half with both teams.
Today Iván Zamorano is the director of a sports center founded on January 4th 2010 in Las Condes , the Escuela de Fútbol - Ciudad Deportivo Iván Zamorano .
