List of German participants in European club competitions in football

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of German participants in European club competitions in football provides an overview of the participants and winners of European and intercontinental club football competitions from Germany . In detail, these are the UEFA Champions League (or the European Cup as a predecessor competition), the UEFA Europa League (or the UEFA Cup as a predecessor competition), the former Exhibition Cities Cup , the former European Cup Winners' Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup (or the World Cup as a predecessor competition) for men and the UEFA Women's Champions League (or the UEFA Women's Cup as a predecessor competition) for women.

German participation in the respective European Cups

Up until the 1991/92 season, teams from the Federal Republic of Germany as well as from the former German Democratic Republic took part in the European Cup. For these seasons, the teams from the FRG are named first and the participants from the GDR are named last.

European Cup / Champions League

Until 1997, only the respective national champion was initially qualified for the competition. From the 1997/98 season this was expanded to include the runner-up, and with the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , the third and fourth-placed clubs in the Bundesliga were also able to qualify for the competition via a qualifying round. Since the 2002/03 season , the number of German participants has been reduced to three, so that only the third-placed player in the previous season can compete in the qualification. This reduction in the number of German starters is due to the loss of a top 3 place in the UEFA five-year ranking .

Exhibition Cities Cup (1955–1971)

City teams or clubs representing commercial cities were eligible to start this competition. The Messestädte-Pokal is often referred to as the predecessor of the UEFA Cup. However, this is not correct. Rather, the UEFA Cup replaced the Exhibition Cities Cup after it was last held in 1970/71 .

UEFA Women's Champions League / UEFA Women's Cup

The German champions and runners-up are directly qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League , which will be introduced in the 2009/2010 season . If a German team wins the title, it is also entitled to start unless it has already qualified via the league placement. The predecessor of the Champions League was the UEFA Women's Cup until 2009 , for which the German champions qualified.
