Les Combes is a French municipality with 737 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Combes is located at 913  m , five kilometers west of Morteau and about 23 kilometers northeast of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends in the Jura , on a plateau north of the Doubs valley cut , east of the Gilley plateau.

The area of the 17.58 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by a low relief plateau, which averages 900 m. It shows a loose structure of meadow and forest and has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil. In the east, this plateau is bounded by a wide ridge that extends from Mont Tantillon to the southwest. On the top of Mont Rognon , which is covered with pastureland, the highest point of Les Combes is reached at 1031 m. This ridge drops steeply to the south to the Doubstal. The Doubs flows here with a winding course through the Défilé du Coin de la Roche , a gorge-like section with a mostly flat valley floor, but which is flanked on both sides by striking limestone walls. The southern border mostly runs along the Doubs, only a small section on its south side on the northern slope of Mont de Grand'Combe also belongs to Les Combes.

The scattered settlement community consists of various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • La Motte ( 913  m ) on a hill on the plateau of Les Combes
  • Le Bas de la Motte ( 893  m ) in a lowland at the western foot of Mont Tantillon
  • La Combe d'Abondance ( 885  m ) on the plateau of Les Combes
  • Mont Bobillier ( 1007  m ) on the ridge north of the Doube valley
  • Colombière ( 800  m ) on a ledge on the northern slope of the Doubs
  • Remonot ( 764  m ) in a valley widening south of the Doubs

Neighboring municipalities of Les Combes are Fournets-Luisans in the north, Morteau in the east, Grand'Combe-Châteleu and Ville-du-Pont in the south and La Longeville and Gilley in the west.

Attractions

Saint-Esprit Church

19th century churches can be found in the hamlets of Colombière and La Motte. Also worth seeing is the cave church of Remonot which was mentioned in writing in 1110 in a document signed by Hugues de Cluny in which it was given to the monks of Rémonot. The Notre-Dame-de-Remonot chapel with its wooden statue Vierge de Pitié (15th century), which has long been a pilgrimage destination. In the various hamlets, numerous farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the traditional Haut-Doubs style.

With 737 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Les Combes is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (652 people were still counted in 1881), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Combes was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming). In addition, there are now various local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Morteau to Gilley. Other road connections exist with Montbenoît and Orchamps-Vennes .
