Wilhelm Molterer (born May 14, 1955 in Steyr , Upper Austria as Wilhelm Kletzmayr ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Since 2015 he has been Managing Director of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI).

Molterer was Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Finance of the Republic of Austria from January 11, 2007 to December 2, 2008 . From April 21, 2007 to November 28, 2008 he was federal party leader of the ÖVP and until the end of June 2011 a member of the Austrian National Council . From 2011 to 2015 he was Vice-President of the European Investment Bank .

Life

Wilhelm Molterer grew up as the son of the farmers Johann and Anna Kletzmayr in Sierning in Upper Austria . After living with his childless aunt and her husband Josef Molterer's family for several years , he was adopted at the age of 14 to later take over their farm. He attended the Federal Agricultural College in St. Florian . After graduating from high school in 1974, he began studying social economics at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . 1980 took place its graduation to the Magister rer. soc. oec. Molterer was chairman of the Linz student body and was considered to be on the left within the ÖVP-affiliated university fraction ÖSU .

After completing his studies, Molterer worked for the Austrian Farmers' Union from 1981 to 1984 , and later became its director (1990-1993). His mandate began 1985–1987 in the Sierning municipal council , and from 1990 he was a member of the Austrian National Council . From 1987 he was secretary in the ministerial office of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry under Josef Riegler and the later EU Commissioner Franz Fischler . After an interlude as ÖVP general secretary in 1993/94, Molterer was Federal Minister for Agriculture and Forestry from 1994 to 2003 . When the ÖVP became the strongest parliamentary party under Wolfgang Schüssel , he changed from 2003 to 2006 as their club chairman in the National Council. During this time he was often accused by the opposition parties of influencing ORF TV coverage .

On January 9, 2007, Molterer was appointed by the ÖVP federal party executive committee to be the managing chairman as well as finance minister and vice-chancellor of the Gusenbauer cabinet . In these roles, he was from January 11, 2007 Federal President Heinz Fischer sworn in . On April 21, 2007 he was elected as the successor of Wolfgang Schuessel as federal party leader of the ÖVP with 97.04% of the votes at the federal party congress of the ÖVP in Salzburg . On June 30, 2008 he took over the office of Minister of the Interior until Maria Fekter was sworn in on July 1, 2008.

On July 7, 2008, Molterer announced the grand coalition with the SPÖ with the words “it is enough” and spoke out in favor of “immediate new elections”. The new election motion was introduced to the National Council the next day and unanimously approved by all five parliamentary groups. Molterer was the top candidate in the subsequent National Council election in 2008 . After the National Council election, which was lost for the ÖVP, Molterer declared on September 29, 2008 that he would make his office as federal party leader available. On November 28, 2008, Josef Pröll was elected to succeed Molterer as party chairman, and on December 2, 2008, he was also his successor as Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance. As a member of parliament, he remained in the National Council until June 2011.

Subsequently, Wilhelm Molterer was Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB) from 2011 to 2015 . He was appointed by the Board of Governors of the EIB on the proposal of the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Austria. In 2015 he was appointed Managing Director of the EFSI by the European Parliament and was confirmed in this position for a further three years in 2018.

Private

Molterer is married to a teacher from Upper Austria and has two sons.
