The Austrian Football Championship 1976/77 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track national league served as the foundation for the Bundesliga . The third level was the Regionalliga Ost ( Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland ) and the regional leagues of Salzburg , Tyrol , Vorarlberg , Carinthia , Upper Austria and Styria .

First performance level - 1st division

General

The championship in the 1st division was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. The syndicate between Wattens and Wacker Innsbruck became Austrian football champions for the fourth time . As an Austrian champion you could also qualify for the 1978 European Cup , where the syndicate reached the quarter-finals. Cup winner Austria-WAC was allowed to take part in the 1978 European Cup , where the team reached the final in Paris on May 3, 1978. It was the first time that an Austrian club entered the finals in a European Cup, apart from the former Mitropacup. So far (1961) Rapid Vienna was the only team that had reached a semi-finals (in the championship cup). - Rapid and LASK represented Austrian football in the 1978 UEFA Cup ; both were eliminated in round 1.

With Austria Salzburg, the last place in the championship had to be relegated. He was replaced with the Wiener Sport-Club by the champion of the second-class 2nd division in the following season.

Rapid 11-0 victory

In the last round (on June 22nd), Rapid Vienna won 11-0 against Grazer AK, their highest victory in the Bundesliga that has existed since 1974/75; this shot Hans Krankl six goals. Against the GAK, of all things, the Rapid team then achieved their second-highest victory with a 10-0 win on September 27, 1985, this time away from home.

20 game suspension

In the 8th round match on October 8th between SK Sturm Graz and First Vienna FC 1894 (0-0) it was in the hustle and bustle of the exclusion of Vienna player Peter Meister (foul on Kurt Stendal / 79th minute) from the referee team (game director was Wilhelm Jarosch from the Salzburg Association) brawl and obviously came to a punch of the guest player Friedrich Hiess against the local Karl Hofmeister. Hiess was banned for one year on October 20th.
On December 12, the ban was reduced to 20 games.

Second performance level - 2nd division

    General

The championship in the 2nd division was contested with 16 teams who met twice during the entire season. The champion of the 2nd division, the Wiener Sport-Club, was promoted to the 1st division, the last three from the bottom. The Wolfsberger AC had to go to the Carinthian regional league, the Kremser SC had to relegate to the Regionalliga Ost and the Salzburg AK 1914 to the Alpine league. The promotion to the 2nd division was regulated more complicated, as there was an asymmetrical third level of performance this season: The champion of the Regionalliga Ost, ASV Kittsee, rose directly, in the qualifying game the six national champions determined another two promoted: Kapfenberger SV (group center) and ASK Salzburg (Group West).
