Aigueperse is a French commune with 2,732 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton Aigueperse in the arrondissement of Riom . It is located along National Road 9 between Clermont-Ferrand and Moulins , 17 km northeast of Riom. The municipality is crossed by the river Buron in a west-east direction.
The place name has been derived from the Latin "Aqua sparsa" - "scattered spring" since the 11th century. Other forms were "Aigua Eparsa", "Esguipersa" 1307 |, "Aiguesperce" (18th century) and "Guiparse" in patois . The inhabitants are called in French "le / les Aiguepersois", the inhabitants "la (les) Aiguepersoise (s)".
Aigueperse was the capital of the county (since 1538 duchy) of Montpensier .
