André Carson

André Carson (born October 16, 1974 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American politician . Since 2008 he has represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

André Carson is the grandson of Julia Carson (1938-2007), who sat for Indiana in the US House of Representatives from 1997 until her death. He attended Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and then studied at Concordia University in Mequon ( Wisconsin ) and Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion . Politically, Carson became a member of the Democratic Party . For nine years he worked for the Indiana State Police and then for the Homeland Security Department of that state, where he headed an anti-terrorist department. Between 2007 and 2008, Carson was a member of the Indianapolis City Council.

After the death of his grandmother, he was elected her successor in the House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the due by-election for the seventh seat of Indiana , where he took up his new mandate on March 11, 2008. After five re-elections so far in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option to run again in 2018. Carson was a member of the Finance Committee and two of its sub-committees. He later became a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and a total of four sub-committees. In the Congress he advocates better education policy, the use of renewable energies and health reform. He supported the troop withdrawal after the Iraq war , but also the use in the war in Afghanistan since 2001 .

Carson grew up a Baptist and attended a Catholic school. He converted to Islam in the 1990s after reading poems by Rumi and the autobiography of Malcolm X. Along with Keith Ellison from Minnesota , he is one of currently two Muslim Congressmen. He is married to Mariama Shaheed, with whom he has a daughter. The family lives privately in the Center Township near Indianapolis.
