British Academy Film Award / Best Director
Listed here: Winners and nominees in the category Best Director ( Best Director , and David Lean Award for achievement in Direction ) at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA Awards) , which was introduced after restructuring the award ceremony in the 1968th The award is given to the most outstanding directorial achievements of the past calendar year, with the number of nominations increased from four to five in 2000. In 1991 the category was renamed “David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction” in honor of the late British film director David Lean.
The American Steven Soderbergh ( Erin Brockovich and Traffic - Macht des Kartell ) achieved double nominations for various film productions in 2001 , while Wim Wenders ( Paris, Texas ) was the only German-speaking director to be able to enter the list of winners in 1985 . He was followed in 2005 and 2008 by Marc Forster and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck , who received nominations for the Hollywood production When Dreams Learn to Fly and the Oscar- winning German-language drama The Lives of Others . In 2013 the Austrian Michael Haneke received a nomination for the French-language drama Liebe .
The winner agreed with the eventual Oscar winner 19 times , most recently in 2019 with the victory of the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón ( Roma ) . The US-American Kathryn Bigelow ( Tödliches Kommando - The Hurt Locker ) was the first filmmaker to win the award in 2010 against, among others, the Danish Lone Scherfig ( An Education ). In 1994 Jane Campion ( The Piano ) was the first female director to join the nominee list.
