Édouard Roger-Vasselin (born November 28, 1983 in Gennevilliers ) is a French tennis player .

Career

Career and junior career

Édouard Roger-Vasselin is the son of the French tennis player Christophe Roger-Vasselin , who reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 1983 and came up to 29th in the world rankings . He taught his son to play tennis at an early age and so Édouard was able to celebrate successes in France as a junior.

2001–2003: First experiences as a professional

In 2001, Édouard Roger-Vasselin switched to the professional camp and began to play in future and satellite tournaments. Just a year later, he won his first future title in Denmark and was then placed in the top 500 of the world rankings. From 2003 he also took part in tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour and in September 2003 he reached a Challenger semifinals in Kiev for the first time. For the French Open he got a wildcard for qualification, but was eliminated in the second qualifying round. In doubles he and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were eliminated in the first round.

2004–2006: ATP debut and first Challenger title

In 2004 he was able to reach a total of six more Challenger semifinals. He also made his ATP debut in Stuttgart in July when he moved into the main field as a lucky loser . There he lost to his compatriot Richard Gasquet . In September he also qualified for the main draw in Shanghai and won his first ATP match against Nathan Healey before being eliminated in the second round against the eventual finalist Lars Burgsmüller . This was the first time he entered the top 200 in the world rankings.

In June 2005 Roger-Vasselin won his first Challenger title in Montauban . He also won two Challenger tournaments in doubles in the same year in Scheveningen and Tampere . After he had meanwhile achieved his best world ranking position with rank 159, he lost world ranking points again at the end of the year due to several first round defeats. In August 2006 he fell back to 436th place, but was then able to reach two Challenger Finals in a row in Saint Petersburg and Samarkand . He also won a future tournament that year and was able to defend his Challenger title in Tampere in doubles.

2007–2009: Grand Slam debut and first entry into the Top 100

After he had reached another Challenger final in Besançon in February 2007 , Édouard Roger-Vasselin was able to qualify for an ATP tournament in Casablanca for the first time in almost two and a half years in April 2007 . After a first round win over the top 100 player Martín Vassallo Argüello , he was eliminated in the second round against Paul-Henri Mathieu . For the French Open he got a wildcard for the main field and reached the third round in his Grand Slam debut. He defeated Radek Štěpánek again a top 100 player. A month later at Wimbledon , Roger-Vasselin qualified for the main draw and was able to reach the third round again after defeating Juan Ignacio Chela , who was in 24th position . He was then listed in the Top 100 for the first time and achieved his best world ranking to date with 82nd place. In the further course of the year he entered three other ATP tournaments, but was eliminated in the first round.

In 2008, Édouard Roger-Vasselin played a total of six ATP tournaments, but could only reach the second round in Chennai and Amersfoort . At Challenger level, he reached the final in Mons , he also won a double title in Surbiton and reached the second round at the Australian Open alongside Gilles Simon . In the world rankings, he finished the year in 166th place.

For Roger-Vasselin, 2009 began without any major highlights. He won two Challenger titles in doubles in Cherbourg and Segovia , and he was also able to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon , where he lost to Stefan Koubek in five sets . In October 2009 he achieved a sensation at the Tokyo ATP tournament ; after successfully qualifying, he met reigning US Open champion Juan Martín del Potro in the first round , whom he defeated in two sets. After another victory over Jürgen Melzer , he reached an ATP quarter-finals for the first time, in which he had no chance against Lleyton Hewitt .

2010–2011: Other Challenger titles

In March 2010 Roger-Vasselin won his second Challenger title in Sarajevo by beating Karol Beck in the final . He also won the doubles competition, after Nouméa and Cherbourg , this was the third double title this year. As in 2007, he received a wildcard for the French Open and defeated Kevin Anderson in five sets in the first round , but was then eliminated by the later semi-finalist Tomáš Berdych . After he had reached two more Challenger Finals in Orbetello and Saint-Rémy in the course of the year , Roger-Vasselin was listed in the top 100 of the world rankings for one week for the first time in over two years in September 2010. In September and October 2010 he was able to qualify for several ATP tournaments and thereby reach the second round in Kuala Lumpur . A week earlier he had reached the semi-finals in Metz alongside Richard Gasquet , but they could not play due to an injury at Gasquet.

2011 began for Roger-Vasselin at the ATP tournament in Chennai , where he qualified for the main draw by defeating Milos Raonic , but lost to Gasquet. After missing the Australian Open qualification, Roger-Vasselin was able to record his first ATP match win of the year as a qualifier against Arnaud Clément in Marseille in February 2011 , before he was eliminated by Tomáš Berdych, who was in second place . Also at the ATP tournaments in Barcelona and Estoril in April 2011 he reached the second round as a qualifier. At the French Open , for which he got a wildcard, he was eliminated in the first round in five sets against Lukáš Rosol . Also in Wimbledon was Roger-Vasselin's final stop after successfully qualifying in the first round against Gilles Simon, who was in 16th position . In July he reached his first ATP quarter-finals of the year in Newport thanks to a lucky draw, which he lost in three sets to Tobias Kamke . A week later, ge first defeated the top seeded Dudi Sela in Granby and then secured his first Challenger title of the year by beating Matthias Bachinger in the final ; thus he was directly qualified for the US Open . Before that, he qualified at the preparatory tournaments in Cincinnati and Winston-Salem , defeating among others the top 50 player Pablo Andújar . At the US Open, Roger-Vasselin was eliminated in the first round in three tight sets against the later round of 16, Gilles Müller . But he was able to celebrate another Challenger double success the following week in Saint-Rémy . First he won the individual final against Arnaud Clément, before he then won the double title together with Pierre-Hugues Herbert .

2012: First ATP title in doubles

After finishing in 106th place in the world rankings the previous year, Roger-Vasselin qualified directly at the Australian Open in 2012. In the first round he benefited from the injury-related abandonment of his opponent Xavier Malisse , but then had no chance in the second round against the later semi-finalist Andy Murray , who was in fourth place . In February 2012 Roger-Vasselin celebrated his greatest successes to date: At the ATP tournaments in Montpellier and Marseille , he reached the second round and the round of 16 in singles, defeating the top 50 player Jarkko Nieminen , among others . It went even better in doubles; each at the side of Nicolas Mahut , he was able to win the title in both tournaments. At the French Open , Roger-Vasselin reached the second round in singles, doubles and mixed.

At the end of 2016, Roger-Vasselin declared that from now on he would only compete in doubles and his single career was over.
