In 2003 Fàbregas reached the final of the U17 World Cup in Finland with the Spanish U17 national team , where he was voted “Player of the Tournament” and top scorer. At the 2006 World Cup he was a member of the Spanish national team, with which he became European champion in 2008 and 2012 , and world champion in 2010 .

Beginnings in Barcelona

Fàbregas began his club football career at FC Barcelona . There he often took the "Volante" position in his youth, as the role of the free, mostly defensive midfielder is called in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. Nevertheless, at that time he was already very dangerous and occasionally scored more than 30 goals within a season. In the first team of FC Barcelona, however, he did not play.

Arsenal FC

Since his perspective in Barcelona seemed limited, he decided to move to London for Arsenal , where he signed a contract on September 11, 2003. After initial difficulties getting used to the British capital, the new friendship with his teammate Philippe Senderos helped him to acclimatise in the unfamiliar environment. Fàbregas, who was only 16 years old, was primarily oriented towards Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva . Earlier than expected, he made his debut on October 28, 2003 in a League Cup home game against Rotherham United . At 16 years and 177 days, he was Arsenal's youngest player in the first team. After he had already scored a goal on penalties there, he marked his first goal of the current game in the same competition in the 5-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers , and was also the club's youngest goalscorer in a competitive game. Fàbregas did not play a league game in the 2003/04 season ; Arsenal FC, which had not lost in the entire championship round, became English champions at the end of the season.

Fàbregas in the game against Sheffield United (2006)

Only in the 2004/05 season was the Spaniard for the first time outside of the league cup in the team. He first played in the Community Shield game against Manchester United and, due to an injury to Vieiras, also in the first four Premier League games, which the press said he played well. He made his debut in the English championship on August 15, 2004 in the game against Everton . Ten days later he scored a goal in a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers , making him Arsenal FC's youngest league goal scorer. Edu and Gilberto Silva's injuries caused further missions for the teenager . He scored his first goal in an international competition on December 7, 2004 in the Champions League in a 5-1 win over Rosenborg Trondheim . At the end of the season he was in the FA Cup final against Manchester United in the regular formation and won there after a goalless 120 minutes on penalties.

After Vieiras left for Juventus Turin , Fàbregas became a regular at the side of Gilberto Silva in central midfield at Arsenal. With the jersey number 4, which had been worn by Vieira, he completed 49 games in the 2005/06 season . Despite his young age, his importance on the professional Arsenal team increased. Since he had a significantly lower physical presence than Vieira and covered a smaller area of midfield, there were initially doubts as to whether he could close the gap that Vieira had left. Notwithstanding this, Fàbregas developed his own style of play and received great recognition , especially for his Champions League appearances against Real Madrid and Juventus Turin. In the game against Juventus, he scored Arsenal's first goal, prepared Thierry Henry's second goal and countered prejudices that his weak charisma against physically fit midfield opponents could quickly rob him of his strengths. Fàbregas was then also in the Champions League final against his former club FC Barcelona, but lost there with 1: 2 and ended the season without a title.

Fàbregas' sporting breakthrough in the preseason led to a series of transfer speculations in the summer of 2006. The management of Real Madrid in particular expressed their interest in signing despite the young Spaniard's long-term contract with Arsenal. Arsène Wenger then declared Fàbregas not for sale and in September 2006 offered him an extension of the contract, which was still valid for six years, by two more years, which Fàbregas accepted with his signature on October 19, 2006. As the reason for this long-term commitment, he cited the technically oriented style of play of Arsenal FC and the collaboration with coach Wenger.

The 2006/07 season represented a development process for the young Arsenal squad, in the middle of which was Fàbregas. The team reached the final of the league cup against city rivals Chelsea , where they lost 2-1 and, as in the previous year, did not win a major title. Fàbregas was still considered one of the key figures in the team and was used in all league games. He opened the Champions League season with two goals to a 3-0 first leg win in the third qualifying round at Dinamo Zagreb ; with a total of 13 templates , he reached the second best value of a player in the Premier League season 2006/07. During this time, Fàbregas received numerous individual honors, including the " Golden Boy Award " of the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport after an election by leading European sports journalists and the nomination for the UEFA Team of the Year 2006. In England he was the player of the He was nominated by his fellow players for the month and for the election of England's Footballer of the Year - the decision for the “PFA Players' Player of the Year” was ultimately made - as was the case for the best young professional (“PFA Young Player of the Year “) - to Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. In June 2007 he was voted the best Arsenal player of the season with 60% of the vote.

In November 2008 Fàbregas was appointed captain of Arsenal FC

The 2007/08 season began with great uncertainty for Arsenal FC. With David Dein , a vice-president had left the club after disputes and the departure of Thierry Henry - the club's top scorer up to that point - to FC Barcelona also raised questions about Wenger's future. Fàbregas realized that his position in the team had increased and publicly admitted that he wanted to face this new challenge offensively. The club started the season surprisingly well given the omens; Fàbregas had a share in this soaring flight to the top of the table with his goals and assists . Between August and October 2007 he received the award for the best Arsenal player three times in a row, and his second choice of Player of the Month in the Premier League followed in September. However, the second half of the season was less successful for Arsenal and Fàbregas. The Champions League quarter-finals were reached after Arsenal defeated AC Milan 2-0 in the second leg at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium . Fàbregas had a share in his goal to make it 1-0. However, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Liverpool. Things also went downhill in the Premier League. At the end of the season, Manchester United had to give way in the battle for the championship and finished third behind Chelsea and ahead of Liverpool. This meant that qualification for the Champions League had been achieved.

After a bumpy start into the following season and criticism from William Gallas , who until then represented Arsenal as captain, he was dismissed and replaced as captain by the 21-year-old Fábregas. A month later, Fàbregas sustained an injury to his knee that made him sideline for four months. Arsenal finished the season in fourth place on the table and without a title. The 2009/10 Premier League season began Arsenal with a 6-1 away win at Everton , to which Fàbregas contributed with two goals and two assists. This was followed by two defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City. The team then remained unbeaten for 13 games and took the lead on the 22nd matchday. In the Champions League, the Londoners met FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals . There Fàbregas converted a penalty in the first leg to make it 2-2. It was his last game that season after Carles Puyol injured his right calf in the foul that resulted in the penalty kick. Without Fàbregas, Arsenal were eliminated by FC Barcelona and finished third in the league at the end of the season. Fàbregas, who had achieved his personal best of 15 league goals this season, was voted into the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the season .

Fàbregas in action in the 2010/11 season

Before the 2010/11 season, FC Barcelona tried to bring Fàbregas back; Arsenal turned it down, however. Fàbregas missed the start of the 2010/11 season due to injury, and played a total of 25 league games this season. This season also ended without a title for Arsenal, and the team was represented in all four competitions with title chances until February 2011. But within two weeks the club lost the League Cup final , eliminated the FA Cup quarter-finals and the Champions League knockout round . In the league they were only a few points behind the leaders until the turn of the year, but ended up fourth.

Return to FC Barcelona

On August 15, 2011 Fàbregas returned to FC Barcelona . He signed a five-year deal with the Catalans. The transfer fee was 34 million euros and could rise by a further 5 million euros depending on the success. Fàbregas took on 5 million euros of the transfer costs himself by declaring himself ready to forego one million euros of his annual salary every year. In his first four league appearances for FC Barcelona in the 2011/12 season, Fàbregas scored one goal each. With FC Barcelona he won the Spanish championship, the Supercopa de Espana, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA World Cup.

Chelsea FC

For the 2014/15 season Fàbregas moved back to the Premier League, this time to Chelsea ; he signed a up to 30 June 2019 the current contract and contributed - as with Arsenal and Barcelona - the shirt number 4. With the Blues won the midfielder in his first season the league and League Cup , 2016/17 he was again English with Chelsea Master.

AS Monaco

On January 11, 2019, Fàbregas moved to French Ligue 1 to AS Monaco, which is threatened with relegation . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2022. Under head coach Thierry Henry , with whom he had played at Arsenal, and his successor Leonardo Jardim , Fàbregas made 13 league appearances (12 times from the start) as a regular player he scored a goal. Under Jardim, the runner-up of the preseason was finally able to secure relegation.

National team

Fàbregas (r.) Won the European Championships in 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2010 World Cup with Spain
Fàbregas at the EM 2012

The current Spanish international began his international career as a teenager. In 2003 he was the top scorer of the tournament as a midfielder at the U-17 World Cup in Finland . In addition, he was voted the best player in this World Cup, where his team reached the final and was subject to the Brazilian selection there. A year later, Fàbregas took part in the U-17 selection at the European Championships in France . Again he moved into the final with his team and was then voted player of the tournament.

After his promotion to a key player at Arsenal FC, the first nomination for the Spanish senior team was not long in coming. Especially the Champions League appearances convinced the Spanish coach Luis Aragonés to help Fàbregas to his first international match in the friendly meeting against the Ivory Coast on March 1, 2006. The teenager was the youngest Spanish international in 70 years and received good reviews for his performance in the 3-2 win.

Two months later, on May 15, 2006, Fàbregas was appointed to the Spanish squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. During the tournament he came in the first two group games as a substitute in the second half and prepared a goal for the 3-1 win against Tunisia . Next to other reserve players - including his team-mate from Arsenal FC in José Antonio Reyes - he started the third game against Saudi Arabia . Fàbregas was also in the starting line-up instead of Marcos Senna in the round of 16 . The 1: 3 defeat against France meant the end of the tournament. With his substitution in the first game against Ukraine (4-0) after 77 minutes for Luis García , Fàbregas had become the youngest Spanish national player at a football World Cup at the age of 19 and was also voted the best young professional of the tournament, the Ultimately Lukas Podolski won, he was on the nomination list.

At the European Championships in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, Fàbregas won the title with his team. At first he only came on short assignments. Among other things, he converted the decisive penalty in the quarter-final against Italy. After the injury of the striker David Villa , coach Luis Aragonés gave him confidence in the final against Germany, in which he played from the start. Fàbregas was elected to the tournament's all-star team .

He was appointed to the squad of the Spanish national soccer team for the 2010 soccer World Cup . During the World Cup he came to four appearances in seven games. After he hadn't been part of the starting line-up in any game, he did the preparatory work in the final against the Netherlands for the decisive goal to make it 1-0 by Andrés Iniesta . This hit in the second half of extra time marked the final score and ultimately led to the Spaniards winning the title.

Fàbregas was added to the squad of the Spanish national team for the 2012 European Championship by coach Vicente del Bosque . Del Bosque played with a 4-6-0 formation at times, without real strikers and only with very attacking midfielders. In this line-up, Fàbregas took on the role of an offensive force. In the first game he scored the goal for the 1-1 final against Italy. In the group game against Ireland, he met again. In the penalty shootout against Portugal (semifinals) he converted the decisive penalty and in the final he prepared the 1-0 through David Silva . Spain became the first team to defend their European title.

In addition, Fàbregas played some unofficial friendlies with the Catalan selection, which is not recognized by FIFA and UEFA .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Spanish squad. In all games he was in the starting line-up and in the third group game against Croatia he prepared the early 1-0 lead. Since the game was still lost 1: 2, the team had to play in the round of 16 against Italy, it lost again and was eliminated.

Style of play

Fàbregas on his way to a corner (2007)

Fàbregas, who was originally supposed to slowly build up in the youth department and over the League Cup after his move to Arsenal, developed surprisingly quickly in the first team and made in the 2004/05 season after the injuries of midfielders Patrick Vieira, Gilberto Silva and Edu above all through his playmaking skills and especially his strengths in the passing game. This quickly made him one of the most promising talents in world football and his key role during the rebuilding of the Arsenal team after Thierry Henry's departure was due to his other strengths, which include a good overview of the game, a high degree of creativity and a disinterested style of play lie. As the central control point in the development game of the "Gunners", he appeared much more mature and experienced than football players of the same age. In standard situations , he was usually the club's first choice and mostly performed the corners and free kicks.

In discussions, Fàbregas emphasized the influence of Vieiras, who became a role model and mentor for him at Arsenal FC. In his style of play, however, he stated that he was emulating his “childhood hero” and compatriot Pep Guardiola . Thereby he differed not insignificantly from the central midfield control centers of Arsenal FC in the recent past and put the technically oriented game above the physical component. As a result, he initially had to expose himself to great criticism, which portrayed him as a "lightweight" and assumed less aggressiveness. Among the critics was Ashley Cole, a former teammate who Fàbregas called an "unproven featherweight" in his autobiography .

In the course of his first seasons Fàbregas had created a greater aggressiveness in the style of play and with his 15 assists in the 2006/07 season - based on all competitions - he became the "creative center" in the game of Arsenal. Even in the first few years, he presented his weak point as a weak point, and the deficiencies in the exploitation of the goal chances in the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 were representative of the weak point of the team in this area. This changed fundamentally in the 2007/08 season, when Fàbregas scored eleven goals in 16 games. Wenger justified the previous weakness of the Spaniard with mental blocks and compared his young star with the former French world star Michel Platini from the 1980s, who as a midfielder had a high goal risk. In view of his young age, critical voices have increased in the recent past, who feared an impending " burnout " state due to the high number of games played in the club and in the national team in recent years .
