Asian Zone / AFC
West Asia and East Asia each provided one World Cup participant. There were four preliminary round groups in each of the two regional blocks. The group winners qualified for the semifinals. In two knockout rounds, the World Cup final participants were determined. Due to the First Gulf War , the warring states Iran and Iraq should play their home games on neutral courts. Only Iraq followed this request and played its games in Calcutta ( India ), Kuwait City and the Saudi Arabian city of Ta'if . Iran, on the other hand, refused to play on neutral courts and was subsequently excluded from the qualifying tournament.
