James Patrick "Jim" McGovern (born November 20, 1959 in Worcester , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since 1997 he has represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim McGovern attended Worcester Academy and then studied history and administration at the American University in Washington, DC until 1984 . In 1972 he was on the presidential campaign team of US Senator George McGovern , with whom he is not related. He also worked for Congressman Joe Moakley until 1996 . Politically, McGovern joined the Democratic Party .

In the 1996 congressional election , McGovern was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Peter I Blute on January 3, 1997 . After 10 re-elections so far, including the 2016 election, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. His latest term of office runs until January 3, 2019. He also has the option of running for another candidate in 2018. Since 2013, he has represented the second constituency of his state in the House of Representatives. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . McGovern sits or sat on the Agriculture Committee and the Rules Committee and a subcommittee. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and campaigns for human rights worldwide.

Jim McGovern is married. He has two children with his wife; the family lives in Worcester.
