John Wilson (politician, 1777)

John Wilson (born January 10, 1777 in Peterborough , New Hampshire , †  August 9, 1848 in Belfast , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1819 he represented the state of Massachusetts twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Wilson attended Harvard University until 1799 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1802, he began to work in Belfast in what was then the Maine district of the state of Massachusetts in this profession. He was also a captain in the state militia. Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party . In the congressional elections of 1812 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the newly established 18th  electoral district of Massachusetts , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1813. Since he was not confirmed in 1814, he could initially only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1815 . This was shaped by the events of the British-American War .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Wilson practiced as a lawyer again. In the elections of 1816 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the 17th district of his state, where he replaced James Carr on March 4, 1817 . In 1818 he was no longer nominated for re-election. After his final departure from Congress, John Wilson worked again as a lawyer. Politically, he no longer appeared. He died in Belfast on August 9, 1848.
