Sponheim is a municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rüdesheim .

geography

Sponheim is located in the border region of the Hunsrück and the Naheland , south of the Gauchswald .

Sponheim also includes the Ackermannsmühle, Annenhof, Brauchsmühle, Braunsmühle and Klostermühle residential areas .

history

The county

The county of Sponheim (Spanheim) was a historical territory between the Rhine, Nahe and Moselle. An Eberhard, allegedly mentioned in 1044, was considered the progenitor of the count's family in the 19th century. This statement is now considered to be Trithemius' invention . The early history of the sex has not been exactly researched.

Count Gottfried III. († 1218) acquired through his wife Adelheid von Sayn entitlement to the legacy of the Counts of Sayn, which in 1247 largely fell to Sponheim. After Gottfried's death, between 1223 and 1237, the sons of Johann I founded the Sponheim-Starkenburg line ("rear county of Sponheim"), Simon I. Sponheim-Kreuznach ("front county of Sponheim"), while Heinrich in 1248 ruled Heinsberg, Blankenberg and Löwenberg inherited, whose heirs soon split into the Sponheim-Heinsberg near Aachen and Sponheim-Löwenberg branches . Gottfried I, a son of Johann I, is the progenitor of the Counts of Sayn-Wittgenstein .

The front county of Sponheim comprised the offices of Kreuznach , Kirchberg and Naumburg from the 13th century . The rear county of Sponheim comprised the offices of Birkenfeld , Allenbach , Herrstein , Trarbach , Kastellaun and Winterburg .

After the Kreuznach line died out in 1414, one fifth of the county fell to the Electoral Palatinate in 1417 , and four fifths to the Starkenburger counts. When these also died out in 1437, their possessions fell to Baden and Veldenz (later Pfalz-Simmern ). After lengthy disputes with the Palatinate, Birkenfeld was transferred to Palatinate-Zweibrücken in the 1707 partition agreement, but fell back to Baden in 1776, while Kreuznach remained with the Electoral Palatinate. In 1798 the whole county came to France, in 1815 to the Kingdom of Prussia , which in 1817 ceded part of it, the Principality of Birkenfeld , to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .

The monastery

A first mention of the monastery from 1101 after Stephan von Sponheim founded the monastery, is now considered to be an invention of Trithemius . The Sponheim Abbey on the Gauchsberg was first mentioned in 1124 when Meginhard von Sponheim handed over the church to the Archbishop of Mainz, Adalbert . It was occupied by twelve Benedictines from the Abbeys of St. Alban and St. Jakob near Mainz. The bailiwick of the monastery remained with the Counts of Sponheim. In connection with the Sponheim Monastery, the place Sponheim was first mentioned in a document in 1224. The most important member of the Benedictine monastery was Johannes Trithemius . The versatile scholar and humanist was elected 25th abbot as the youngest member of the convent in 1483, just a year and a half after joining the monastery  . In this position he gave monastic life in Sponheim a new seriousness, but at the cost of latent resentment on the part of the monks. In 1505 he finally left the monastery and renounced the abbey. At that time, the library that Trithemius had installed in the monastery comprised over 2000 copies and attracted scholars from all over Europe.

With the introduction of the Reformation in the Nahe area, the monastery was abolished in 1556. At the end of the 17th century there was another attempt at re-establishment, but this only lasted until the French were finally dissolved in 1802.

Historic Buildings

Catholic parish church

Catholic parish church, side of the choir

The former monastery church and today's Catholic parish church “St. Maria "and" St. Martin “has a Greek cross as a floor plan, which was probably created by chance because the planned nave was never completely completed. The church structure dates from the high Romanesque period in the 12th century and was given its present form in the 13th century.

The choir, the transept with the apses and the pillars with the associated pointed arches of the crossing are Romanesque . The renovations carried out in the 13th century include the nave with the attached chapel, the vault and the crossing tower. The tiled floor in the choir and in the side absids also dates from the 13th century, as does an eagle relief and a lion's head on the southern outer wall. In the course of more recent restorations, parts of older wall paintings have been exposed on the interior walls.

From the rich furnishings of the monastery only a few grave slabs and the sacrament shrine from 1487 in the choir wall remain. The other pieces are almost all from the 18th and 19th centuries. Worth mentioning are a baroque altar in the side chapel as well as several figures of saints, including an Immaculate and Saint Martin by Martin Biterich , as well as some ecclesiastical equipment.

The Klosterstrasse, which lies at the foot of the church, was portrayed on January 13, 2014 in "Hierzuland" in the Rhineland-Palatinate state show on SWR television.

town hall

Neo-Gothic town hall

The Sponheim town hall was built in the mid-19th century in neo-Gothic style, probably based on a design by the then Kreuznach master builder Conradi. The pointed arch frieze that accompanies the sloping gable and eaves is striking . A crenellated three-storey tower is placed in the northeast corner of the building. In the 19th century, the interior of the town hall also included a detention cell .
