Junior time at FC Schalke 04

In the 2010/11 season he scored seven goals in 24 games and prepared two more goals in the B-Jugend-Bundesliga West. In the 2011/12 season he exceeded this mark when he had already scored eleven goals after 17 games and presented ten more. He was then appointed to the A youth team (U19) at Schalke 04 at the age of 16 . With her he won the German A-Youth Championship in 2012.

In the DFB-Pokal game against SV Sandhausen , he was in the professional squad for the first time on October 30, 2012, but was not used.

On December 14, 2012, Meyer signed a sponsorship agreement that ran until June 30, 2015. The agreement included an option for further cooperation.

In the winter break of 2012/13, Schalke took Meyer to the training camp in Qatar . On the 22nd matchday of the 2012/13 Bundesliga season , Meyer made his professional debut when he was substituted on for the away game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . On March 12, 2013 Meyer played for the first time in a European Cup competition when he was substituted on in the second leg of the Champions League against Galatasaray Istanbul .

In May 2013 Meyer extended his contract, which expired in the summer of 2015, to 2017. While he was still playing with the shirt number 29 in the 2012/13 season , he got the number 7 for the 2013/14 season , which Raúl had previously worn and not for an indefinite period of time more should be forgiven.

In the play-off first leg of the Champions League against PAOK Saloniki , he was in the starting line-up for the first time in a professional game. In November 2013, Meyer extended his contract prematurely until June 30, 2018.

In the 2014/15 season he came as an attacking midfielder to 28 league games in which he was able to score five goals and prepare another. In the 2015/16 season he was also used on the outside under coach André Breitenreiter . For the 2016/17 season , Breitenreiter was replaced by Markus Weinzierl . In the first seven Bundesliga games, Meyer only entered 264 of a possible 630 game minutes. Although he acted again as a tenth, he only played his way into the team after a system change, after which he played a kind of hanging top .

In the 2017/18 season , Meyer was retrained as a defensive midfielder by the new coach Domenico Tedesco . He played 24 Bundesliga games (21 of which were in the starting line-up). Sports director Christian Heidel announced in April 2018 before the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach that Meyer would not extend his expiring contract and would leave the club in the summer. On April 29, Meyer criticized the behavior of the association in an interview with Bild and stated that he no longer wanted to work with Heidel. A day later, the club denied the allegations and released Meyer from training and games.

Crystal Palace

For the 2018/19 season, Meyer moved to the English Premier League at Crystal Palace . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2021. In his first season, Meyer came under the head coach Roy Hodgson on 29 Premier League appearances (15 times from the start), in which he scored a goal.

National team

After moving to Schalke, he made his debut in the U-15 national team on November 11, 2009 against the U15 Estonia.

Meyer participated with the U-17 national team in the U-17 European Football Championship 2012 in Slovenia . There they were only defeated in the final against the Netherlands. Meyer was elected the tournament's top scorer with three goals and also the best player.

In January 2013 he was nominated for the U-18 national team for the first time . In August he was appointed to the U-19 squad for the first time and was used against Hungary's U19s.

Meyer was used several times during the qualification for the U-19 European Championship in Hungary . For the tournament itself, however, the club refused to approve and justified this with the simultaneous preparation of the season and the player's need for recreation, so that U-19 coach Marcus Sorg finally decided not to be nominated.

On May 13, 2014 Meyer made his international debut in a friendly against Poland. After he was initially appointed to the provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup , he was canceled after the game for the preparatory training camp.

Meyer played in the German U21 the two qualifiers against Ukraine for the 2015 Under-21 Football Championship in the Czech Republic nominated.

On August 31, 2016 Meyer played his second game against Finland in the German national team, two years after his debut, and scored his first international goal with the goal to make it 1-0.

Under U-21 national coach Stefan Kuntz , Meyer won the U21 European Championship 2017 in Poland. He was used in all five games. After the tournament he was elected to the "Team of the Tournament".

Style of play

When asked about his style of play, Meyer named his strengths: "Good ball safety, good overview, good dribbling". He is also certified as having a good finish on goal. Meyer attributes his good technique to the fact that at the age of ten he played futsal for four years in addition to club football . In addition to the training sessions at the club, he also had one futsal unit per week: the futsal game was played immediately after the soccer league game.

Meyer's favored position is that of the central attacking midfielder (" tens "). However, it can also be used on the wings or as a hanging tip . In the 2017/18 season, Meyer played in defensive midfield at Schalke 04.
