The season 2011/12 was the fifth regular time after the renaming of the former National League A in National League A . Since the NLB champions EHC Visp failed in the league qualification at HC Ambrì-Piotta in 2011 , the 2011/12 league started with the same teams as in the previous season.
The ZSC Lions prevailed in the playoff finals against SC Bern in seven matches and won the Swiss championship for the seventh time.
mode
The 12 teams play 2 double rounds of 22 games each. There are also 6 additional encounters per team against 3 opponents, which are determined on the basis of a regional division (east, central, west). In total, each team plays 50 qualifying games. Then the best eight teams will determine the Swiss champions in play-off style. The quarter-finals , semi-finals and the final are played according to the best of seven mode .
The other four teams determine in the playouts which team has to play against the champions of the National League B to stay in the league.
