Before founding the Primera División (until 1929)

Until 1929, Spain did not have its own national football league, instead regional football leagues existed. The first of these leagues was the Campionat de Catalunya (initially Copa Macaya ) for Catalan club teams. FC Barcelona has participated in this competition since it was first held in 1900. The winner of this Catalan championship qualified for the Copa del Rey , which took place in the same season following the regional championships. From 1910 the Copa del Rey had the status of a national championship and was partly played in league mode.

Primera División (since 1929)

In 1929 the Primera División , the first Spanish football league, was founded. Barcelona were among the ten founding members and have never been relegated since. The Copa del Rey, which until then was practically a Spanish championship, continued to exist as a Spanish cup and from then on was only played in knockout mode. Barcelona also continued to take part in the Campionat de Catalunya until it was abolished in 1940 .

Remarks

  1. The Copa del Rey was first played in the 1901/02 season.
  2. In the Copa Macaya, two points were deducted from Barcelona for the use of an ineligible player. The club then withdrew from the competition and organized the Copa Barcelona.
  3. The winners of the Catalan championship were originally supposed to qualify for the Copa del Rey, but the championship had not ended in time.
  4. The league could not be played to the end due to a scandal in the game between X Sporting Club and FC Barcelona. With a score of 3: 2 for the home side, Barcelona scored 3: 3 with a dubious penalty. Shortly after the penalty was converted, the referee changed his mind and canceled the penalty! After weeks of protests, the association organized a final play-off that Barcelona lost 3-1 to X Sporting Club .
  5. After a 4-0 victory in the quarter-finals against Gimnástica de Madrid , Madrid protested against the placement of goalkeeper Reñé in the ranks of FC Barcelona. The association ordered the game to be repeated in compliance with the protest. Barcelona refused to compete and were disqualified.
  6. Some clubs, including Barcelona, broke away from the existing Catalan Football Association and formed a rival association that held its own Catalan championship. This competition was canceled after just four match days, but Barcelona were declared champions.
  7. Barcelona ended the season tied with RCD Espanyol , which resulted in a final playoff for the championship. Barcelona lost the game 4-0.
  8. Barcelona withdrew from the tournament - in protest against the decision of the Spanish Football Association to move the venue of the final from Seville to Bilbao.
  9. Barcelona ended the season level on points with CE Europe . In the final playoff for the championship, Barcelona lost 1-0.
  10. Barcelona ended the season level on points with CE Europe. In the final game of the championship, Barcelona won 1-0.
  11. a b c d e f no event due to the Spanish Civil War
  12. Because the Catalan championship was not held, no teams from Catalonia were allowed.
  13. After 34 match days, regular league operations were followed by play-offs for first places. Both parts of the season were taken into account in the statistics.
  14. Barcelona lost the first leg 3-0 to Atlético Madrid. Barcelona did not want to play for the second leg as there were not enough players available (only nine outfield players and two goalkeepers) due to international secondments. Barcelona was then disqualified by the Spanish Association and excluded from the Spanish Cup for a year (the latter was never carried out).
