Strüth is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the association of Nastaetten .
geography
Strüth is located in the Taunus and belongs to the bailiwick with the neighboring villages of Welterod and Lipporn .
history
Around 1117, the presumed progenitor of the Nassau family, Count Dudo von Laurenburg , transferred goods to Lipporn from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Salvator in Schaffhausen for the construction of a male monastery in Lipporn. In 1125, his successor, Count Ruprecht von Laurenburg, founded the Schönau convent in Strüth. Both were later combined to form a double monastery. From 1541 to 1544 the Reformation was introduced in Strüth, Welterod and Lipporn. The Schönau monastery remained Catholic. In 1606 the women's convent was dissolved. During the Thirty Years War , the monastery and site were plundered several times.
In the course of secularization in 1802, the men's convent was also dissolved, and the monastery and town came into the possession of the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 . After the First World War, during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland , the town was located in a narrow corridor between the bridgeheads on the right bank of the Rhine between the Americans around Koblenz and the French around Mainz. Until the military occupation by France in 1923, the area existed as a so-called free state bottleneck . From August 9th to 10th, 1942, during an English air raid, a large number of incendiary bombs fell on an uninhabited area outside of Strüth. In March 1945 the place was captured by American troops. From 1947 to 1974, Premonstratensians, expellees from the Teplá Monastery in Bohemia, settled in the Schönau monastery. In 1986 the last Dernbach sisters also left the monastery.
