The minivan Daihatsu Atrai 7 was presented for the first time at the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show and was available in stores from July 2000. The model was an enlarged Daihatsu Atrai to create space for a third row of seats in the rear overhang. Due to the property of now 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 seats, it also received this name affix. From October 2000, it was also marketed as Toyota Sparky by the parent company Toyota .

A 1.3 L in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with initially 66 kW (90 hp), later 68 kW (92 hp), was used as the drive, the power of which was transmitted to the rear wheels with a 5-speed manual transmission . A 4- speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive was also available as an option. With the appearance of the Toyota Sparky, a version with only 5 seats (2 + 3) and an extra large trunk was introduced especially for commercial customers. In the beginning, the model series was a great success, but its sales continued to decline. Therefore, the production of the models was discontinued in 2004. It was not until almost 4 years later that the segment of the 7-seater based on small cars, popular in Japan, was served again with the Daihatsu Boon Luminas and its sister model, the Toyota Passo Sette .
