The 2012 Western & Southern Open was a tennis tournament held in Mason, Ohio near Cincinnati from August 12-19, 2012 . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2012 and was played on hard court. This season it was the seventh of nine tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category .

The defending champion in the singles was the Briton Andy Murray , who failed in the round of 16 against the lucky loser Jérémy Chardy . The winner was the Swiss Roger Federer , who won the title for the fifth time in Cincinnati with his final victory over Novak Đoković and thus became the sole record winner of the tournament. Đoković failed with his defeat for the fourth time in five years in the final of the tournament. In doubles Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were the defending champions, but this year they competed with other partners. While Paes failed together with Radek Štěpánek in the second round, Bhupathi reached the final again with his compatriot Rohan Bopanna . There they had to admit defeat to Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau . For the Swedish-Romanian pairing, this was the first victory in a tournament in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category .

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles and the eight top seeded pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round.
