Palzem an der Obermosel is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Saarburg-Kell association.

Geographical location

Palzem is the southernmost Moselle municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate and is located near the border triangle with France and Luxembourg . The place is connected to the national road network by the B 419 . At Palzem there is a barrage of the Moselle , on the opposite side of the river is the Luxembourg municipality of Stadtbredimus .

history

Palzem is documented in 924 as Palatium or Palatiolum (= small palace), when the Archbishop of Trier and Arch Chancellor Rudgar gave the church in Palzem as well as an estate with the land belonging to it to a certain Luitfried and his family. However, finds (axed oak posts) suggest that a Roman bridge was built over the Moselle around 122 BC; During this time, the entire network of roads and roads was expanded in order to tie Gaul and the Rhenish region firmly to the Roman Empire . In the Middle Ages, the Trier Abbey of St. Matthias was the landlord of Palzem and the other present-day districts. Dilmar is first mentioned in 1036 as Dilmere (Old High German for swamp or standing water), Esingen in 1258 as Bona de Enselingen (the name probably comes from the Franconian personal name Ensilio ). Helfant (924 documented Helifelt ) was badly damaged towards the end of the Second World War, as was Kreuzweiler (912 documented Vilare ), whose traces of settlement go back to Roman times and which was temporarily under Luxembourg sovereignty. Wehr used to live from fishing ( fish weir ) and lime distillery , but today mainly from viticulture.

On July 20, 1946, Palzem, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg, was incorporated into Saarland, which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone on February 16, 1946 . On June 8, 1947, this French expansion of the territory was withdrawn to 21 municipalities, so that Palzem came to the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946 .

On March 17, 1974, the previously independent communities of Helfant, Esingen, Kreuzweiler and Wehr were incorporated. The Kreuzweiler community was newly formed on June 7, 1969 from the dissolved Kreuzweiler and Dilmar communities.

While in the districts of Palzem and Wehr mainly viticulture and tourism (camping site on the Moselle) predominate, the districts of Helfant, Esingen, Dilmar and Kreuzweiler are dominated by agriculture.

Viticulture

With around 200 hectares of vineyards, Palzem is the southernmost Moselle wine - growing community in Rhineland-Palatinate. The soil consists partly of shell limestone , primeval sea deposits that can only be found on a short stretch of the route in the Moselle valley.

The vineyards are well-known: Schloss Thorner Kupp , Lay , Carlsfelsen , Rosenberg and Kapellenberg . In particular Elblingwein and Elblingsekt be established. In addition to white and Pinot Gris is Pinot Meunier a special feature that goes back to a wine tradition. For example, 40% of the wines of Thorn Castle in the 17th century were red, as the field name in an old field map “de roude Wengert” (= the red vineyard ) suggests.

In 1984 Palzem was the special class district winner in the competition Our village should become more beautiful ; Wehr were also successful in the district decision in 1986 and Kreuzweiler in the state decision in 1987. Attractions include:

Thorn Castle

Thorn Castle rises on a high Moselle hill in the Kreuzweiler district . The name comes from the Latin turis (= tower). This was built about 2000 years ago to protect a ford as a Moselle crossing. The castle was built in the 13th century. Structural extensions in the 16th and 17th centuries as well as the manor house from 1800 form an imposing assembly. One round tower was destroyed in the bombing in 1945, the second tower, a rectangular former residential tower , now serves as a gate tower . From the Middle Ages on, Thorn saw different sexes as feudal men , such as the lords of Rollingen , those of Bübingen and those of Musiel. Today's owners are the Baron von Hobe-Gelting family . Thorn is the oldest castle winery on the Moselle. The only preserved tree press in Europe is worth seeing .

St. Bartholomew in Helfant

The catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew (built 1848–49), which can be seen from afar , is also known as the “Helfanter Dom” or “Saargau Cathedral” because of its huge twin towers.

Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

The chapel is one of the cultural monuments of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is at the end of a path of the painful rosary that begins in the village on the Helfanter Berg. The neo-Gothic chapel at the highest point was built in 1890/91 according to plans by Reinhold Wirtz in place of a legendary previous building. There is a carved, neo-Gothic Vesper image above the structure of the side altar .

On the Moselle in the district of Wehr and below the Palzem train station there are several sculptures created in 2001 as part of the sculpture symposium Stones on the River . Palzem is a center of Barefoot - waterskiing in Germany. The Bulldog Museum for rural culture and technology with bulldogs and tractors from the 1920s to 1950s as well as an outdoor game reserve is located here . The marked Via Caliga hiking trail partly follows the route of the old Roman road and shows the eventful history of the place and the landscape with 24 information boards. The Roman strap sandal Caliga serves as a guide. The 234 km long German part of the Moselle Cycle Path begins in Palzem . The long-distance hiking trail Moselsteig leads through the village.
