La Longeville is a commune with 806 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Doubs in the Défilé d'Entre-Roches gorge

La Longeville is located at about 822  m , near Montbenoît , about 14 kilometers northeast of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , slightly elevated on the northern side of the Doubs valley , in the Val du Saugeais, north of the Jura heights of the Montagne du Larmont , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the municipal area of 15.66 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The southern municipal boundary runs partly along the Doubs, partly on the slopes on the left (northern) side of the valley. Here, the Doubs initially flows in a relatively wide valley low to the northeast through the Val du Saugeais. Below La Longeville, the river enters the Défilé d'Entre-Roches . This gorge-like section is accompanied on both sides by striking rock walls. To the north, the community area extends over the gently rising slope of La Longeville, which shows a loose structure of meadow, pasture and forest, up to the adjacent wide ridge. Here, on a knoll in the Bois des Courtots , the highest point of La Longeville is reached at 991 m. In the far north-east, the municipality has a share of the Gilley plateau (on average at 860 m), which also connects to the Défilé d'Entre-Roches to the north. The area extends with a narrow strip to the southern slope of the anticline of the Crêt Monniot .

In addition to the actual village, La Longeville also includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Largillat ( 860  m ) on the slope above Montbenoît
  • Les Travers ( 840  m ) on the northern slope of the Doube valley
  • Les Courtots ( 905  m ) on a plateau above the Doubstal
  • Les Auberges ( 854  m ) on the Gilley plateau
  • Les Prés Vuillins ( 860  m ) on the Gilley plateau
  • Les Maitrets ( 880  m ) on the Gilley plateau
  • Les Arces ( 868  m ) on the Gilley plateau south of Mont Chaumont
  • Bassignet ( 915  m ) in an elevated position south of the Crêt Monniot

Neighboring municipalities of La Longeville are Gilley in the north, Les Combes and Ville-du-Pont in the east, Montbenoît in the south and Montflovin and La Chaux in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, La Longeville belonged to the monastic rule of Montbenoît. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The village does not have its own church; it is part of the parish of Montbenoît.

With 806 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), La Longeville is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (779 people were counted in 1886), there has been significant population growth again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Longeville was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming). In addition, there are now various local small-scale businesses, mainly in the cheese-making and wood processing sectors. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D437 road from Pontarlier to Morteau and is easily accessible from Montbenoît and Ville-du-Pont. Further road connections exist with Gilley and La Chaux. The operation of the former railway line from Pontarlier to Gilley was discontinued.
