The ZSC Lions ( ZSC , colloquially also «Zätt» , former name: Zürcher Schlittschuhclub ) are a Swiss ice hockey club from Zurich .

history

The club was founded on October 15, 1930 in Zurich and became Swiss champions in 1936, 1949, 1961, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2018 . In addition, the club won the Spengler Cup in 1944/45 and 1945/46 , the IIHF Continental Cup in 2000/01 and 2001/02 , the Champions Hockey League in 2008/09 and the Victoria Cup in 2009.

Formerly known as Zürcher SC or ZSC for short, the club has been officially called ZSC Lions since the merger with the ice hockey department of Grasshoppers Zurich in 1997 (now GCK Lions ) .

1980s

In 1981 the Zurich team rose to the National League A , but at the end of the 1981/82 season they had to return to the NLB as bottom of the table. In 1983 the ZSC returned to the top division - again only for one season. So it went on: NLA promotion in 1985, relegation to the NLB in 1986. Then it took until 1989 before the ZSC rose again.

1990s

In November 1991 Arno Del Curto became the new head coach. He led the ZSC in the spring of 1992 in the playoff semifinals. Del Curto, who later became an institution at HC Davos , stayed in Zurich until October 1993.

In April 1997 the merger of the Zürcher SC with the ice hockey section of the Grasshopper Club Zurich was announced. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote about it in an article in March 2016: "The ZSC brought the hall, the audience and the place in the top league with it, the Grasshoppers had hardly any fans and no suitable stadium, but the money and a youth department." The new team name was originally supposed to be Zurich Lions , but the fans protested against the disappearance of the traditional acronym ZSC, so that the name ZSC Lions was ultimately chosen.

The sudden death of Chad Silver at the age of 29 caused horror at the ZSC and in the ice hockey world in early December 1998 . The native Canadian was found lifeless in his apartment in Oerlikon , and an autopsy of the body revealed that he died of heart failure.

2000s

After the ZSC had won championship honors in 1936, 1949 and 1961, it took until 2000 before the title was won again. In the playoff final of the spring of 2000, the Zurich team, headed by head coach Kent Ruhnke , defeated HC Lugano, who were considered favorites, with 4-2 victories. That put an end to the wait to win the championship after 39 years. Ruhnke was about to be fired during the season, before the playoffs the club decided not to extend the coach's contract at the end of the season.

In the following season 2000/01 - in the meantime supported by Ruhnke's successor Larry Huras in his second term in Zurich - the ZSC followed suit and successfully defended his title. Again the final opponent was called Lugano. The series was won 4-3, the decision was made in the extension of the seventh game. Huras, who was unpopular in parts of the team, had to leave despite the triumph.

For the 2005/06 season the Lions played in the converted indoor stadium for the first time, which was a new situation for the team as well as for the fan base. After the poor performance in this season, in which they could barely secure relegation in the relegation round, the Lions started a "reparation tour" in the following season , which the media announced in advance as "The Lions' Revenge" has been. With a practically unchanged squad and unchanged situation in the stadium, the play-offs were reached thanks to a playful high from mid-October to December.

The ZSC Lions are funded today by Walter Frey and Peter Spuhler . Since December 2007 Peter Zahner , former association director of the Swiss Ice Hockey Association , has been CEO of ZSC Lions (ZLE Betriebs AG) and since 2010 Chairman of the Board of GCK / ZSC Lions Nachwuchs AG.

The ZSC Lions won their sixth championship title on April 10, 2008 in the Hallenstadion under the leadership of the German-Canadian trainer Harold Kreis . In the playoff final against HC Servette Genève , the Zurich team caught up 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven series and won their sixth game 2-1 after a penalty shootout . Coach Kreis, who was criticized during the course of the season, had already announced his departure after the end of the season for Germany ( Düsseldorfer EG ) in February 2008 .

In January 2009, the former ZSC defender Edgar Salis was hired as a new head of sport.

As the first team to win the ZSC Lions on January 28, 2009, the newly founded Champions Hockey League . After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Russia , the ZSC beat HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk 5-0 in the Diners-Club Arena in Rapperswil . For the victory in the Champions Hockey League, the ZSC was awarded the Zurich-Leu Gold Prize by the then Mayor Elmar Ledergerber .

On September 29, 2009, the ZSC Lions won the Champions Hockey League against the NHL stars of the Chicago Blackhawks in the Zurich Hallenstadion in the Victoria Cup game 2-1.

2010s

With two playoff series wins, both after four games, the 'Zätt' qualified for the final for the Swiss championship in the 2011/12 season , in which they played against SC Bern . After SC Bern took a 3-1 lead in this series, the ZSC made up a 1: 3 deficit in the best-of-seven series and won the seventh game away on April 17, 2012 after the decisive goal of Steve McCarthy 2-1 with 2.5 seconds before the end. Master coach Bob Hartley left the ZSC after winning the title and moved to the NHL club Calgary Flames .

Game action in October 2014

The 2013/14 NLA season was clearly dominated by the ZSC Lions. After completing the qualification, they had 20 points more than the second-placed Friborg. In the quarter-finals, the ZSC met HC Lausanne, which was able to qualify for the play-offs for the first time in its first NLA season after promotion. In an exciting series, the Lions won 4: 3 and thus qualified for the semi-finals. The HC Genève-Servette was waiting there and this series was also highly competitive. Only in the seventh game did the ZSC prevail 4-0 and qualified for the play-off final. The final opponent of the ZSC Lions was the canton rival for the first time with the EHC Kloten . In the derby final, the ZSC remained undefeated and won the eighth championship title in the club's history with the Swiss championship 2013/14.

After the 2015/16 season, in which they were cup winners, the four-year term of the coaching team Marc Crawford / Rob Cookson ended , instead the Swede Hans Wallson was signed as the new head coach, who brought his compatriot Lars Johansson with him as an assistant. Both had previously worked successfully at Skellefteå AIK . Wallson led the ZSC to second place in the qualification in its first season 2016/17, in the playoff quarter-finals the ZSC was eliminated against Lugano (2: 4 wins).

In April 2017, Edgar Salis switched from the position of sports director to the newly created post of head of player screening, with Sven Leuenberger becoming the new sports director . At the end of December 2017, the Lions made a change of coach: Wallson and his "co" Johansson were fired because "the sporting success failed to materialize and the team's development stagnated," as the club stated in the founding statement. At the time of separation from the Swedish coaching team, the team was in seventh place in the table. At the same time, it was announced that Serge Aubin would be head coach from the 2018/19 game year. Until the end of the 2017/18 season and thus until Aubin took office, Hans Kossmann was employed as a temporary coach . Kossmann solved the task brilliantly and led the ZSC to win the championship title. In the final series they prevailed with 4: 3 wins against Lugano.

On January 14, 2019, the ZSC separated from Aubin, under whose leadership the team made "no sustainable progress" according to those responsible. His successor was Arno del Curto, who only left HC Davos in November 2018 after a 22-year tenure and who had coached the ZSC between 1991 and 1993. Del Curto missed the championship round with the team, which had not happened in the previous 13 years. Del Curto's contract was not renewed after the end of the 2018/19 season. The new head coach was introduced in May 2019 by the Swedish-American dual citizen Rikard Grönborg , who had previously worked for the Swedish association for a long time and, among other things, was responsible for the national youth team.

Home ground

The ZSC played on the Dolder ice rink from 1930 to 1950 and in the Zurich Hallenstadion since 1950 . In the 2004/05 season, however, this was rebuilt, so all home games of the ZSC during this period took place in the neighboring Stadiönli (artificial ice rink Oerlikon, KEBO for short). The renovation work had a financial volume of over 140 million francs and lasted until July 2005.

In September 2016, the Zurich voters voted with 56.6 percent for the construction of a new ice hockey stadium with a seating capacity of 11,600 in the Altstetten district . In addition to the arena, the complex is to contain a hall for training operations, restaurants and office space. The work is expected to be completed in 2022.

Fans

In the Hallenstadion, 3rd place in sectors X2-Q2 belongs to the «Z» fans. The atmosphere in the Hallenstadion lives from this rank. Since the 2015/2016 season there has been a standing area for ZSC fans in sector Q2, which should improve the mood. In addition to the ice, the “3. Rang Züri »launched. The project organizes car rides at discounted prices for away games of the ZSC.
