history

Certificates

The places Gieleroth ( Geilnderode , Gelenterode ) and Herpteroth ( Herbeterode , Herpenterode ) were first mentioned in a document from the parish court of Almersbach ( Almerßbach ) from 1408. The parish of Almersbach belonged to the county of Wied ( Wede ) at the time . In 1428 the Cistercian monastery Marienstatt had a farm in Gieleroth. Amteroth ( Ampteroede ) is documented for the first time in the donation book of the Liebfrauenkirche von Hilgenroth from 1464.

Prehistory and early history

The clearing name is recognizable in the names of the three places, the clearing places in the Westerwald were created between the 9th and 14th centuries. The recognized regional researcher Hellmuth Gensicke counts Gieleroth among the older clearing locations. The location on the old " Hohen Strasse " from Cologne to Frankfurt also indicates early settlement. The name ending -roth (= -rod) in Gieleroth could even have been derived from the Celtic word road (for street).

reformation

The parish of Almersbach has belonged to the county of Sayn since the 16th century . In 1561, Count Heinrich IV zu Sayn stipulated in his will that “no other religion, doctrine or belief that only the Augsburg confession is understood” should be introduced in the country. Under Count Wilhelm III. In 1605 the denomination was changed from Lutheran to Reformed (Calvinist) teaching until Countess Louise Juliane finally allowed Lutheran teaching again in 1636. Since that time there has been a Reformed and a Lutheran parish with two pastors in the parish of Almersbach . In 1820 the two evangelical denominations were united to form the Uniate Church .

Herzburg

To the northeast of Gieleroth, on the border with Ingelbach , lies the Herzberg (325 m above sea level). There was the castle complex called " Herzburg ", which may have existed as a refuge in prehistoric times . In the Tranchot - Müffling card from 1818/1819 this was recorded as "Die Harzburg". A section wall that has been preserved is registered as a ground monument.

Post station Gieleroth

Since the end of the 17th century there was an Imperial Imperial Post Office and horse changing station in Gieleroth on Cologne-Frankfurter Strasse . The post office was located in the "Reinhardshof", this stands as a cultural monument under monument protection . In 1771 the post office was relocated to Wahlrod . He received the name Reinhardshof later. In 1990 the catering business, most recently as the "Zur Tränke" restaurant, was given up. The nearby “Postweiher” has been protected as a “Protected Landscape Component” since 1986. It is assumed that it already existed at the time of the first documentary mention.

Gieleroth School

In 1854 a "school community" was set up for the three villages in Herpteroth. During that time, school lessons took place on a monthly basis in the houses of the parents of the students. In 1859 a communal schoolhouse was built in Gieleroth. From 1872 the school was placed under state supervision, previously supervision was carried out by the superintendent . The teachers changed frequently, and in 1890 the school was renovated. In the first half of the 20th century, 60 to 70 students were always taught in a classroom. During the Second World War, soldiers were quartered in the school. In 1957 a new school was built, which now had two classrooms instead of one. The primary school in Gieleroth was closed in mid-1973 and the children have been taught in Altenkirchen since then. A kindergarten was set up in the school building.

Mining

From the second half of the 19th century, there were a total of 17 mining fields in the area of today's local community . Individual pits already existed before 1830. Mainly iron was mined, along with lead, copper, zinc and silver, the mines belonged to the Hamm mining area . Mining ceased around 1910. There were also slate pits .

Forest interests

A forest interest group is a special form of a cooperative in which all shareholders originally have equal shares in the cooperative's entire forest ownership. These were created in the 18th century in the counties Sayn-Altenkirchen and Sayn-Hachenburg . The cooperative forest of Amteroth with an area of 68 hectares was divided between the then twelve houses in the village. The shares were tied to the respective house and were inheritable or passed on to a new house owner. Later the shares were halved, so that one share was one twenty-fourth, and the bond with the house was also abandoned. The Amteroth forest interest group still exists today, the cooperative forest covers an area of 52 hectares.

The Gieleroth forest interest group still exists today. It owns 29 hectares of forest and is divided into 18 shares. The Herpteroth forest interest group existed until 1911, they had joint forest ownership of 47 hectares and 18 members. The forest was sold to the state in 1911.

Amteroth threshing hall, today Amteroth village community center

In 1949, eleven Amterother farmers decided to jointly purchase a powerful threshing machine. They called themselves "Amteroth Threshing Association". In 1950 a hall was built for this threshing machine, which can also be used for other purposes on special occasions, e.g. B. Celebrations was used. The threshing community existed until 1970. After a different use in the meantime, the hall was renovated by the local community in 1987 and has since served as a village community center for the district of Amteroth. The crossed flails in the coat of arms symbolize the district of Amteroth and the communal threshing hall.

Herpteroth threshing hall

From 1959 Herpteroth also had a threshing hall and a shared threshing machine.

Well house Herpteroth, village community center Herpteroth

The well house in Herpteroth was built in the early 1990s. It got its name because there used to be a village well at this point. It was built from natural stone in the basement and half-timbered on the upper floor. It serves the Herpteroth district as a village community center.

Backes Herpteroth

The Backes in Herpteroth were built after the First World War and served the village as a "community oven" for around fifty years. In the early 1990s the building and the old oven were extensively renovated and are used again at village festivals.

Herpteroth wash house

In 1955, 22 interested parties jointly built a wash house in Herpteroth, which was used according to a set daily schedule. Apart from a one-off payment for participation and the water and electricity money, use was free for the participants in the interest group.

Village community center Gieleroth

The village community center in the Gieleroth district was built in 1994. One of the reasons was the closure of the restaurant in the historic Reinhardshof.

Territorial Affiliation

Until 1803 the three villages belonged to the county of Sayn-Altenkirchen , regionally to the Saynischen Amt Almersbach and to the parish Almersbach. After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Sayn-Altenkirchen came to Nassau-Usingen , in 1806 to the Duchy of Nassau and in 1815 after the treaties of the Congress of Vienna to the Kingdom of Prussia . The border between Prussia and the Duchy of Nassau ran east of Gieleroth and Herpteroth from 1815 to 1866. The neighboring town of Borod was already part of Nassau. Individual boundary stones marked “KP” (Kingdom of Prussia) and “HN” (Duchy of Nassau) are still preserved. Today the border between the Altenkirchen district and the Westerwaldkreis runs here .

Amteroth, Gieleroth and Herpteroth became independent rural communities under Prussia and belonged to the Altenkirchen mayor , which was assigned to the then newly created Altenkirchen district in the Koblenz administrative district in 1816. Part of the hamlet Widderstein (south of the Wied) also belonged to the community of Gieleroth . This structure remained until 1939. On April 1, 1939, the three communities were combined to form the community of Gieleroth. In 1946 Gieleroth came to the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Gieleroth
Blazon : “The coat of arms is divided by a blue bar with silver wickerwork, on top there is a red post horn in gold, covered with a silver horse's head, on the bottom the coat of arms is split by a curved tip, on the right and left there are green slopes with one each golden oak leaf, in between there is a golden field with crossed red flails. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The three ribbons symbolize the three districts or the formerly independent communities of Gieleroth, Herpteroth and Amteroth. The blue color of the bar stands for the headwaters of the Almersbach in the district. Each of the three districts is represented with its own symbol in the coat of arms: the post horn with the horse's head indicates the former post office in Gieleroth, red and gold are the colors of the County of Sayn, to which the place belonged until 1803; the oak leaves stand for Herpteroth and an earlier ravine; the crossed flails on gold stand for Amteroth and for the former threshing barn.

Attractions

Herpteroth was able to take sixth place in the main class in 1993.

Ortsnecknames

The three districts have among themselves and in the neighboring villages Ortsnecknamen :

  • The inhabitants of Amteroth ("Amdert"), in dialect the "Amder", are called "Quötschebüch" (plum bellies) because there are many orchards and plum trees there and the residents are supposed to eat these plums in excess.
  • The inhabitants of Gieleroth ("Gillert"), in dialect the "Gillerder", are called "Mockers" because around 1830 the Herpteroths were raised by the Gielerothers because of their many children.
  • The inhabitants of Herpteroth ("Herptert"), in local dialect the "Herpter", are called "Säuköttelspetzer" (pig dung sharpeners) because they like to argue about unnecessary issues, in the sense of "going to extremes".
