With the introduction of the Courts Constitution Act on October 1, 1879, the previous Bavarian courts were repealed. The higher regional courts took the place of the appellate courts, the regional courts took the place of the district courts and the local courts took the place of the city courts, the regional courts as well as the city and regional courts. The previous city and district court became the Landshut District Court, but the judicial district itself did not change. Since then, the higher-ranking court in the instance has been the Landshut Regional Court, which was also established in 1879 .

On April 7, 2009, a shooting broke out in the courthouse in which one party in an inheritance process shot three other parties involved in the same process who were related to him. Two people, including the perpetrator, were killed and two people were seriously injured in the incident.
