At nearly 148 minutes in length, The First Avenger: Civil War is the third-longest Marvel film. In second place is Avengers: Infinity War with a length of 149 minutes and in first place Avengers: Endgame with a length of 182 minutes. The film was released in German-speaking cinemas on April 28, 2016. It was the top-grossing film of 2016, grossing over $ 1.1 billion .

action

The film begins with a look back at December 16, 1991: In a secret base of HYDRA in Siberia , the winter soldier Bucky Barnes , who is resting in cryostasis, is reactivated for a mission. He pushes a car off a forest road, kills the occupants and takes a load of preparations that were transported in this vehicle.

A year after their deployment to Sokovia , the Avengers in Lagos stop an attempt by super mercenary Crossbones to steal a sample of a biological weapon. After he was defeated by Captain America in battle, he activated an explosive device in his combat vest. Wanda Maximoff was able to move Crossbones telekinetically out of the immediate danger zone on the ground, but brought him too close to the facade of a building. The explosion wreaked havoc, collateral damage, with fatalities, causing public opinion to turn against the superheroes. As a result, the United Nations, under the auspices of US Secretary of State General Thaddeus Ross, passed the “Sokovia Accords”, according to which the Avengers, among other things, were no longer allowed to act as a private organization but were subordinated to the UN. The Avengers divided opinions about this contract: Tony Stark , who was held accountable by a bitter mother who lost her son in the battle against Ultron in Sokovia, advocates political control of the Avengers as necessary; Captain America, on the other hand, rejects the Sokovia Accords because, in his opinion, they hinder the superheroes' freedom of action too much in the event of imminent danger.

During their internal discussion, Rogers receives news that his friend Peggy Carter has passed away. So he travels with his friend Sam Wilson to Peggy's funeral in London, where they see Peggy's niece Sharon Carter again. In Vienna , where the Sokovia regulation is to be ratified in the meantime, a bomb attack is carried out on the assembly building, in which, among others, T'Chaka, the king of the African state of Wakanda, is killed. The Winter Soldier is identified as the perpetrator on a camera image. When Rogers and Wilson find out about the assassination attempt and, with Sharon's help, find out the whereabouts of Bucky, they set off there and try to take him into custody while still alive. However, it comes to a confrontation with the German special unit GSG 9 and T'Chaka's son Prince T'Challa , who wants revenge on Bucky for the death of his father. At the end of the chase, all four superheroes are arrested and brought to Germany to the headquarters of the Joint Terrorism Task Force , where Bucky Barnes is interned in a secret high-security facility.

Meanwhile, Helmut Zemo , a former colonel in the Socovian army, searches for the secret of the Winter Soldier in order to avenge the death of his family, who died uninvolved in the battle of the Avengers against Ultron. He finds the HYDRA base in Siberia and discovers records there that can activate a latent programming in Bucky's mind that turns him into a killing machine. Disguised as a psychologist who is supposed to interrogate Bucky on behalf of the UN, he gains access to his prison, activates its programming and lets him run amok. Rogers and Wilson can take Bucky into custody and hide with him. After Bucky regained his sanity, he informs Rogers that Zemo probably intends to reactivate more winter soldiers who are still sleeping in the old HYDRA base and to take them into his service.

To stop this plan, Rogers and Wilson start a team of like-minded people who include themselves and Bucky, Wanda, Hawkeye and, on a recommendation from Sam Wilson, Ant-Man . Stark, on the other hand, assembles his own team on behalf of Ross to arrest Captain America and prevent his friends from leaving: these include War Machine , T'Challa, Black Widow , Vision and the young Peter Parker alias Spider-Man . At the Leipzig airport there is finally a confrontation between the two teams. Thanks to Black Widow's support, Captain America and Bucky are able to break away with their opponent's Quinjet, but their comrades are captured. Vision tries to stop the fugitives and accidentally destroys War Machine's power source, causing Rhodes to fall and suffer paraplegia .

While Rogers and Bucky make their way to the HYDRA base in Siberia, Stark receives new information that identifies Zemo as the real culprit behind the attack in Vienna, and thinks better of it. Since Ross no longer wants to cooperate with him, Stark convinces the prisoner Wilson of his change of heart and sets off for Siberia to help Captain America, secretly followed by T'Challa. Stark meets Rogers and Bucky in the HYDRA complex and the three of them track down Zemo. However, he had no intention of recruiting the Winter Soldiers, who are in cold sleep at the HYDRA base, but shot them. After Zemo reveals his true motives and intentions - namely, the destruction of the Avengers from within - he shows them a video recording of the Winter Soldier attack in 1991, which reveals Bucky as the assassin who killed Tony Stark's parents, Howard and Maria is responsible. Overwhelmed by anger, Tony Stark goes after Barnes, but Rogers gets in his way, triggering another bitter confrontation between them. In the end, Rogers can render Stark's armor harmless and retreat with Bucky, who lost his cybernetic left arm in the fight. Zemo is placed outside the base by T'Challa, whom he tells that the Avengers have his family on their conscience. T'Challa prevents Zemo from committing suicide so that Zemo must answer for his actions.

Rogers sends a letter to Stark, in which he stands by his actions but adds that despite the severe tension between them, he will always be there for him. Then he frees his imprisoned friends who, thanks to T'Challa, find asylum in Wakanda and Bucky voluntarily allows himself to be put into cryostasis without his metal arm in order to protect the world from him until his conditioning can be switched off for good. In a post-credit scene , Spider-Man has to answer questions from his aunt May about the injuries he suffered in Leipzig, but in return he can look forward to the new equipment that Stark has given him.

production

Staff and cast

In January 2014, Anthony and Joe Russo agreed to direct a third Captain America film, which also directed the sequels Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II , which were in came to cinemas in 2018 and 2019. Producer Kevin Feige left the work on the script back to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely .

Again Chris Evans could be signed as Captain America , Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff . Paul Rudd took over a second time after the movie Ant-Man from the year 2015, the role of Ant-Man . In April 2015 it was announced that Daniel Brühl would take on the role of Helmut Zemo , whose father was a well-known Nazi scientist in the comics.

The role of Spider-Man was taken on by Tom Holland , who starred as Peter Parker in the 2017 Spider-Man remake Spider-Man: Homecoming . On the introduction of the new Avenger, who only plays a minor role in the film, Anthony Russo said: Spider-Man was always a big favorite for me and my brother when we were growing up.

The characters Hulk, Thor and Pepper Potts are not seen in the film, but are mentioned.

Filming

The main location for the film was Atlanta . In January 2015 it was announced that parts of the film would also be shot in Puerto Rico and Berlin . The film was also shot in Iceland. Filming began on April 27, 2015. The Nigerian metropolis of Lagos was rebuilt in downtown Atlanta . The shooting in Germany was supervised by the - also co-producing - Studio Babelsberg . The Berlin filming locations included Potsdamer Platz , the Olympic Stadium , the Federal Press Office on the Reichstagufer, Schiffbauerdamm , and an underpass from the exhibition grounds to the ICC , where scenes were filmed that play in the film in Bucharest and most recently in The Hunger Games - Mockingjay part 2 was shown. A few days later, shooting ended on August 22, 2015 on the grounds of Leipzig / Halle Airport , which can be seen towards the end of the first trailer for the film. While filming there, Johansson was injured when she lost control in a motorcycle stunt. Only the few actors who did not wear masks in the film during the final fight scene, such as Black Widow, Captain America and Winter Soldier, were present during the filming at the airport. The other characters were added to the film as computer graphics .

Film music

In August 2014, the film's directors announced that British film composer Henry Jackman , who had previously composed the score for The Return of the First Avenger , would take over the work on the sequel. The soundtrack for the film was released on May 6, 2016, comprises 21 songs and has a total length of 69:09 min. In May 2016, the soundtrack entered the soundtrack album charts at number 5.

James Southall thinks that Jackman's soundtrack is stylistically far removed from that of the previous films in a positive sense. The soundtrack in the Siberian Overture begins with a theme that sounds like it comes from an old thriller and also has some positive features overall, and he emphasizes the crystal-clear recording of the orchestra. Lasse Vogt also calls the soundtrack a clear step forward compared to its predecessor, even if it is not the best musical contribution to the cinematic Marvel universe . Vogt describes the beginning of the soundtrack as a quiet melody that slowly builds up tension, played by woodwinds , strings and rolling drums, which are replaced by a shrill, unearthly sounding wail. Vogt, however, is not completely convinced of the beginning of the soundtrack: The big problem with Jackman's score is that it sometimes sounds too anonymous and aimless to be able to assign the titles to the respective scenes. The really good tracks only start in the second half, before that the music - with a few exceptions - lacks a clear line or even identity, not to mention a real guiding theme.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12 because the story can be clearly recognized as fictional and the heroes' criticism of violence could rule out any socio-ethical disorientation. The release certificate says: There are numerous, visually stunning fight scenes, but most of them take place between the costumed superheroes. Due to their superhuman abilities, they hardly take any damage even in the most turbulent action scenes.

Reviews

The film was 91 percent of critics at Rotten Tomatoes convince, putting it in the top 100 of the best here rated movies of the year 2016. In addition, the film went from the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Comic Book / Graphic Novel Movie as Winners. The consensus is that the film heralds the next wave of Marvel films as an action-packed superhero blockbuster, that it can boast no cartoonist plot and that it takes up thought-provoking topics.

ScreenCrush editor-in-chief Mike Sampson said after a press screening , 'Captain America' is so good, it's a better Avengers movie than the last one. [...] The great battle scene in Civil War is an absolute explosion. Spider-Man, as might be expected, is stealing the show from everyone. Ant-Man, what might not be expected, does the same to him. That is followed by Jeff Goldsmith, who highlights the outstanding role Spider-Man played: his role in the story and the right amount of humor really made it perfect.

Andreas Platthaus of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says: Compared to the first part, which is cumbersome due to its deep roots in the prehistory, the two directing brothers Anthony and Joe Russo kindled an impressive fireworks display even for the ballistically explicit superhero films and also made it, alongside all of them Brawls and shootings to tell another story of the development of their hero, which sowed those doubts in him that not only come up in the third 'Captain America' film [...], but also blossom in the most beautiful flowers. In addition, Platthaus finds the cast with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlett Witch refreshing and successful, because they bring a witty feminine-feminist component to the film, which can be seen in Wonder Woman's appearance in the recently failed 'Batman v. Superman 'movie sorely missed. Alexandra Seitz from epd Film also recognizes a better work of the directors compared to this film: It is easy to see that the Russos succeed in what the argument between Batman and Superman completely missed the other day, namely the crashing clash of the giants is not only somehow understandable , but above all to motivate them plausibly.

For Daniel Krüger of Musikexpress , Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier is the real star of the film, but he also thinks that the basic story about the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America is stretched by the appearance of numerous other heroes, and that the film would have only five or six characters works even better

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter thinks the film's audio editing and visual effects are Oscar-worthy . In December 2016, it was announced that the film had been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2017 Academy Awards .

Gross profit

In the week before its US theatrical release, the film was shown in more than 30 countries between April 27 and 29, 2016, which represents over 60 percent of all sales markets. According to initial estimates, the film grossed around 84 million US dollars and landed at number 1 in all cinema charts. On May 6, 2016, the film was then shown in all markets, including the USA and China, where it was shown Also reached number 1 straight away. The global grossing of the film is currently around 1.15 billion US dollars. This made the film the world's most successful film of 2016 and is currently number 22 in the list of the world's most successful films (as of August 8, 2020). The film has so far attracted 1,734,683 visitors to German cinemas and is therefore number 15 in the annual charts (as of March 21, 2017).

useful information

Stan Lee (here at San Diego Comic-Con International 2015 ) is the creator of the character Iron Man and has a cameo as a FedEx courier in the film
  • The film is based on a limited series of Marvel comics entitled Civil War from 2006-2007, with a few changes that are essential for the ongoing storyline. The reason given in the comics for the public restriction of the superheroes - through a failed mission by the New Warriors - is here replaced by a mistake in a mission by the Avengers. An iconic scene from the final battle between Captain America and Iron Man, which appeared on the cover of Empire magazine in April 2016 , was created from a cover from the comic book Civil War # 7 (January 2007).
  • Two scenes in the film with Scott Lang allude to some of his early adventures as Ant-Man: His intrusion into Iron Man's armor in Iron Man # 133 (April 1980), where he comes to the rescue of Tony Stark after a serious malfunction trapped in his own armor; and his ride on Hawkeye's arrowhead in Avengers # 223 (September 1982).
  • Stan Lee makes a brief appearance as a FedEx delivery man at the end of the film .
