Mairie Doubs |
Doubs is a French commune with 3,021 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Doubs is 812 m above sea level, about three kilometers north of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the eastern edge of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), on both sides of the upper Doubs , at the western foot of the Bois de la Côte.
The area of the 8.94 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Arlier, which averages 820 m. Along the eastern edge of this plain, the Doubs flows north, draws a wide arc around the hill of the Crêt de la Rappe ( 877 m ), takes the Drugeon from the left and then turns north-east into the valley of the Val du Saugeais to enter. The formerly meandering river is now largely canalized and straightened. To the east, the municipal area extends over the densely wooded ridge of the Bois de la Côte , which geologically and tectonically forms an anticline of the folded Jura and is oriented in this region in the southwest-northeast direction according to the strike direction of the Jura. At 1052 m, this ridge is the highest point in the Doubs.
Neighboring communities of Doubs are Arçon in the north, Pontarlier in the east and south and Dommartin and Vuillecin in the west.
history
The discovery of a necropolis from the Merovingian period indicates an early settlement of the Doubs municipal area (archaeological objects are in the museum in Pontarlier). In the Middle Ages, the Montbenoît monastery owned rich land here, while the other part of the village belonged to the Pontarlier lordship. Together with Franche-Comté , Doubs came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The imposing Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1869 in neo -Gothic style. The Ceres fountain (end of the 19th century) stands in the village square. With the Chapelle de La Salette, Doubs has another place of worship.

With 3,021 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Doubs is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 330 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1950s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has increased fivefold. Outside the old town center, numerous new single and multi-family houses were built, so that the Doubs settlement area has grown together almost seamlessly with that of Pontarlier today.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Doubs was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community and a suburb of Pontarlier. Since the 1970s, larger commercial and industrial zones have developed, especially west of the Doubs. Today Doubs has around 100 businesses, including trading companies, precision mechanics, food and wood processing companies, numerous retail outlets and large shops. Many workers are also commuters who work mainly in Pontarlier. Doubs has a sports center and from mid-2007 a new college.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located at the intersection of the main roads N75 ( Besançon - Pontarlier - Lausanne ) and D437, which leads from Pontarlier to Morteau . Other road connections exist with Houtaud and Vuillecin. The operation of the railway line from Pontarlier to Morteau with a station in Doubs was discontinued. Today Doubs has a bus connection with Pontarlier.
