Orchamps-Vennes is a French commune with 2,129 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Orchamps-Vennes is located at 777 m above sea level, ten kilometers northwest of Morteau and about 40 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the western edge of the Vennes basin, on a slope sloping slightly to the east at the foot of the Bois de la Côte forest.

The area of the 24.79 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the Vennes Basin, which is approximately 4 km wide and almost 10 km long, and averages 770 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Several dry valleys , which topographically belong to the catchment area of the Dessoubre, are sunk into the basin .

To the north, the municipal area extends to the valley furrow of the Col des Ages (785 m), which connects the Vennes basin to the Valdahon plateau. The western boundary runs on the partly wooded, partly pastureland ridge of the Bois de la Côte (931 m). It forms an anticline of the Jura folds and is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction according to the strike direction of the mountains. In the south, the communal soil extends over a series of ridges and depressions in between to the rocky crest of the Bois d'Orchamps (1005 m) in the area of the Col du Tonet (crossing into the Doube valley ). At 1020 m, the highest point in Orchamps-Vennes is reached on the northeastern roof of Mont Chaumont .

In addition to the actual village, Orchamps-Vennes also includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Les Fourches (804 m) on the northern outskirts near the Col des Ages
  • Les Chenevrottes (747 m) on the southern edge of the Vennes basin
  • Les Ravières (783 m) on the southwestern edge of the Vennes basin
  • Les Prés (856 m) on the ridge west of the Vennes basin

The neighboring communities of Orchamps-Vennes are Loray and Vennes in the north, Fournets-Luisans in the east, Gilley in the south and Flangebouche in the west.

history

Orchamps-Vennes has been the most important town in the Vennes basin since the 16th century. It developed into a trading center on the route from Besançon to Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Orchamps-Vennes is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
